Mercedes-Benz X 250d Review: A Look at the Pickup’s Pros and Cons

The X-Class is the new challenger of Mercedes-Benz in the premium pickup truck market, which is dominated by more established names in the segment like Ford, GMC, Chevrolet and Nissan. So, how was it like driving the new Mercedes-Benz X 250d model of the range?

Good Side

Motoring took the X 250d for a spin and these were the things they liked about it:

1.  Strong Engine

The X 250d possesses a 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine sourced from Renault. It gives  the pickup a pretty decent output of 190 hp.

2. Classy and Comforting Interior

When it comes to comfort and detailing, the cabin of the X-Class is a notch up than the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok. Despite the loud engine of the auto, the interior of the X 250d is surprisingly very quiet. The multi-link coil spring and Tenneco dampers provide a comforting feel for the occupants of the pickup too.

3. Autonomous Braking as a Standard Fit

The X 250d comes with self-braking system as a standard feature, which boosts its safety features.

Downside

Here are the downsides of the X 250d identified by the source:

1. Slow Acceleration

The X 250d tested can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 11.8 seconds. That’s slow compared to many of its rivals and even its counterpart from the Nissan Navara. It should be noted that customers can still go for the higher powertrains of the X-Class though and there might be an AMG version of the auto coming soon.

2. Tech was Trickled Down From the C-Class

The report described the control panel, instruments and dashboard of the X 250d as a “dumbed-down C-Class” because many of these elements can be found in the standard model of the sedan.

3. Lack of Feel in Steering

This may come as a good news for some, but the review criticized the X 250d for its light power steering. It said that it does not go with a huge vehicle like the X-Class. That factor also compromises its performance in winding roads.

Overall

It should be reminded that the Mercedes-Benz X 250d sits in the starting line of the X-Class range. Therefore, The luxury features are just on a decent level. However, when it comes to design, it is a formidable competitor to its other well-established rivals, and the Navara where it shares its platform.
