Samsung is now upgrading the operating system of the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) to Android 7.1.1 Nougat. The update is currently available in Poland, although the manufacturer may begin deploying the software package in other areas soon. Included in Android 7.1.1 Nougat is the app shortcuts feature, which allows the user to initiate a select set of in-app actions by long-pressing the app icon. In addition, Android Nougat brings native support for split-screen multitasking and quick reply feature. The latter permits people to reply to messages and emails on the notification shade without the need to open the application. There are also under-the-hood improvements made to the operating system including the improved version of the Doze mode, which now activates once the screen is turned off.
The South Korean smartphone manufacturer also included into the update a number of additional features specific to the company’s proprietary skin. The user interface of the handset has been updated, and it is dubbed as the Samsung Experience 8.5. The new UI of the handset is similar to what is found in the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, and the user may switch between the home screen and the app drawer by simply swiping up or down the launcher. The camera app has also been modified so that the shutter button can be used to zoom in or out the image. The Samsung Cloud and a new Device Manager app are now incorporated into the proprietary skin.
Samsung is deploying the update automatically and it may take several days or even weeks before the installation package arrives at all handsets. However, users may also proceed to the device settings in order to manually initiate the upgrade process. Before the software package is installed, it is advisable that to backup files and images stored in the handset o a personal computer or a microSD card and to fully charge the handset’s battery. Once the software upgrade is installed, the new OS build can be identified through the firmware version number J510FNXXU2BQJ8. The Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) is powered by the Snapdragon 410 chipset, which is comprised of a quad-core CPU running at a 1.2GHz and the Adreno 306 GPU. The device sports, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal flash storage, and a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 by 720. The rear camera is equipped with a 13-megapixel sensor while the front-facing selfie shooter has a 5-megapixel snapper.
