A new Meizu-made Android device leaked online earlier today, having originally appeared on Chinese social media platform Weibo. The handset appears to sport a screen utilizing an aspect ratio of 18:9 (2:1) but unlike many other handsets adopting this tall image format, the leaked unit features relatively regular-sized bezels. While its top bezel is somewhat slimmer than those found on most 16:9 smartphones, the phone’s chin appears to be rather large, though this perception may also be a result of the tilted angle at which the photograph was taken. The image that can be seen above also shows some standard side bezels between the long edges of the handset’s body and its actual screen, with its top housing an earpiece, proximity sensor, and a single-lens secondary camera.
Despite being large enough to accommodate a physical Home button, no such key is present on the chin of the unannounced Meizu device, with its right edge showing a glimpse of a volume rocker positioned beneath a standard power button. The handset presumably features a fingerprint scanner on its back panel and if it ends up being commercialized, it would become the first contemporary mobile device from the Chinese original equipment manufacturer without a physical Home key. The company has reportedly been experimenting with a number of 18:9 devices in recent months, some of them found their way to the World Wide Web, though virtually every leaked prototype of a tall Meizu-made handset had significantly slimmer bezels than the one that can be seen here, suggesting that the newly unveiled offering may be a mid-range or entry-level product.
The Chinese source who shared the image unsurprisingly claimed that the handset in question is bound to run some version of Android, adding that Meizu will share more details about it at a press conference set to be held “in the near future.” The leaked product may also be made by Meizu-owned Charm Blue which was spun off as a standalone company earlier this year and already confirmed it’s working on a new kind of handset set for a release in 2018. The source of the image also suggested that a MediaTek SoC will power the device, though that may have been just an educated guess seeing how Meizu and the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer have been collaborating for many years now.
