By far the worst part about covering the Isle of Man TT is a press release titled “Statement on behalf of ACU Events Ltd,” as this typically signifies another fatality at the famed road race. It is with a heavy heart then to report we now have two such statements for this year’s races. English racer Davey Lambert, 48, and Jochem van der Hoek, 28, from Holland, have died after two separate incidents.
Lambert (pictured left, above) crashed at Greeba Castle at around the five-mile mark of the Mountain Course during the third lap of Sunday’s Superbike TT race. Lambert was treated at the scene before being taken to a local hospital. He was later transferred to a hospital in Liverpool where he succumbed to his injuries yesterday evening. Lambert was racing in his first TT, though he as very familiar with course, having raced in the Manx Grand Prix on several occasions.
Racing in his second TT week, van der Hoek died at the scene after crashing on the first lap of today’s Superstock TT race at the 11th milestone. van der Hoek had a career-best 27th overall finish during this year’s Superbike TT, winning a bronze replica trophy.
