What should I Do if I Notice a Dog Overheating in a Parked Car?

What to Do if You See a Dog Locked in a Car on a Hot Day

Dog owners love to take their four-legged best friends along on car ride adventures, but this activity can be deadly during the summer months. It doesn’t have to be too warm outside for a car to become dangerously hot inside, even with the windows rolled down. Unfortunately, many dogs still die in cars each year because owners are unaware of the dangers. Howdy Honda put together some information about what to do if you see a dog locked in a car on a hot day.

When it’s 72 degrees Fahrenheit outside, the temperature inside your vehicle could easily reach up to 116 degrees within an hour. If it’s 80 degrees outside, your car could reach 99 degrees in just 10 minutes. In the amount of time it takes to grab a few things at the store, your dog could suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke or suffocation. Even though our furry friends love to spend time with us, for the love of dogs…keep Fido at home.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, there are a few steps that people can take when they see a dog locked in a hot car, especially if it is showing signs of heatstroke or not moving at all. We have listed the steps below:

Step #1: Take down the car’s make, model, and license plate number.

Step #2: Go to the nearest business and notify the managers or security guards Ask them to make an announcement to find the car’s owner. Many people will quickly return to their vehicles.

Step #3: If the owner cannot be located, call the non-emergency number for local police or animal control and wait by the car for them to arrive.

Most states, including Florida, have laws protecting citizens for trying to rescue dogs in hot cars. Make sure to research the laws in your area so you know what actions you can legally take in the event of this situation.
