The 2016 Isle of Man TT is done and dusted, and what a fortnight it was! It was a meeting filled with incredible highs and lows, brilliant warm weather throughout, record-setting performances across every class, and, sadly, the death of four competitors. The emotional intensity, fervor, and outright love for the TT and the brave riders who take on the Mountain Course is hard to describe, and quite complex.
Friday’s Senior TT was delayed for almost three hours due to the ‘Cloak of Manannan’ rolling in off the Irish Sea (we call it ‘fog’ here in the U.S., but I’m all for crowd-sourcing a more menacing name for domestic low-lying clouds). But once the skies cleared, Michael Dunlop turned in a race for the ages, setting a new lap record of 16:53.9 at an average speed of 133.96.
In our TT preview article a few weeks back, we wondered if lap records would fall, new personalities and young riders would emerge, and if the TT would thrive as it grew and changes. A firm yes to all of the above. While 2017 will bring changes in the form of a new promoter and efforts to grow the TT brand, I’m convinced that this unique motorsports event has another 100 years ahead of it. And I’ll be back every year I’m still standing.
Here’s a video highlighting some of the scenes from the 2016 Isle of Man TT. See you next year!
