Google’s new Motion Stills app will turn iPhone’s Live Photos into GIFs

Live Photos, which bring some life to a photo taken by an iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, or an iPhone SE, was a feature Apple introduced with its flagship devices late last year. And as is par for the course for an Apple product, enjoying a Live Photo outside of the Apple ecosystem requires the help of a third-party source. That’s exactly what Google aims to do with a new app called Motion Stills.

With the free Motion Stills app, which is available right now, iPhone owners can choose a Live Photo and then have Motion Stills work a bit of magic and turn it into a shareable GIF. The app works thanks to an algorithm that will use video stabilization technology to freeze the background of the image and then utilize loop optimizations to have the foreground loop end-to-end. Google says users can include several different Live Photos to create a movie montage, too.

Once you’ve made your new GIF, you’ll be able to share it through social media, a messaging app, or even email. If you’re an iPhone owner or know someone who is, Motion Stills looks like a solid way to do share your Live Photos with those outside of the Apple ecosystem.
