According to captions that follow this photo around the Internet, we’re in Ferndale – specifically just west of the intersection of Nine Mile and Woodward – sometime during the Fifties. And if we check out the modern-day street view of the location, we can surmise that the photo was taken from the top of what is now the Ferndale Arts Building.
