There was a time when the major U.S. carriers were issuing press releases on a regular basis to announce the addition of new markets to the list of areas covered by their high speed data infrastructure. As the market matured and these major projects concluded, the pace of these announcements waned. Leave it to Verizon to keep plugging away at the pockets of the country that still need coverage as shown in their latest press release announcing the addition of thirteen new markets to their XLTE network.
Verizon’s XLTE technology increases available bandwidth available for users by almost double the standard 4G LTE availability. The technology uses a combination of both 700 MHz and AWS spectrum to increase speeds that customers experience. With the addition of the new markets, Verizon now covers a total of 466 markets throughout the U.S. with XLTE. The latest additions include:
- Alpena, MI
- Ironwood, MI
- Lewiston-Auburn, ME
- McCook, NE
- Oneonta, NY
- Petoskey, MI
- Pottsville-Frackville, PA
- Roseburg, OR
- Tupelo-Corinth, MS
- Vicksburg, MS
- Victoria, TX
- Waterville/Augusta, ME
- Wausau/Rhinelander, WI
Verizon also announced the addition of their first XLTE network participant through the LTE in Rural America (LRA) program. LRA is a program in which Verizon partners with local carriers to bring 4G LTE coverage to rural markets. The first partner in this LRA program to provide XLTE coverage is Bluegrass Cellular which is adding XLTE coverage to their existing 4G LTE network in central Kentucky. Verizon is currently partnering with 21 different local carriers to provide 4G LTE service in 169 rural counties scattered throughout the U.S.
