The monthly security update produced by Google is rolling out now.
These are the two big announcements from this month’s Android Security Bulletin:
- To reflect a broader focus, we renamed this bulletin (and all following in the series) to the Android Security Bulletin. These bulletins encompass a broader range of vulnerabilities that may affect Android devices, even if they do not affect Nexus devices.
- We updated the Android Security severity ratings. These changes were the result of data collected over the last six months on reported security vulnerabilities and aim to align severities more closely with real world impact to users.
Google specifically names are large number of topics that are being handled, but the average person will have no idea what any of them mean.
The following Nexus devices are getting the May 2016 security update right now:
- Nexus 5 (MOB30H)
- Nexus 5X (MCT19T)
- Nexus 6 (MMB30G, M0B03I)
- Nexus 6P (MTC191T)
- Nexus 7 2013 (MOB30J)
- Nexus 9 (MOB30G)
- Nexus Player (MOB30G)
- Pixel C (MXC89F)
On your device after the software update is downloaded and installed, the Android security patch level will read “May 2, 2016.” The second day of every month is typically when Google pushes out its security updates; however, owners of non-Nexus devices will have to wait until individual hardware manufacturers and carriers implement anything and push out updates of their own to be covered by the May 2016 security update.
