LG Innotek has developed a new idea for fingerprint readers: put them under the phone’s screen.

It may not seem like a revolutionary idea, but it’s an innovation that would solve a lot of problems. Fingerprint readers have become a must-have in smartphones, and many manufacturers are having trouble figuring out where to put it. LG in the past has put there’s on the back of the device, but this new discovery might change that design for future handsets.

LG says it sits just under the phone’s glass cover. They’ve created a fingerprint reader that’s slotted into a 0.01-inch (0.03 milimeter) space just under that cover glass.

The Korean-based company noted that this new technology shows comparable results to the traditional button-type fingerprint sensor.

There hasn’t been any news on what LG plans to do with this new technology. But, it wouldn’t be a far-fetched idea that LG would start including the design in future smartphones. The company is also speaking with other manufacturers to try and bring the technology to market within a year, according to a report from the Korea Times.

Again, this is no revolutionary technology, but it makes an opportunity to make smartphones look even sleeker than they already are.
