Trademark shows up for Huawei 7P

A new trademark application has surfaced in the U.S. government’s database in which Chinese manufacturer Huawei has filed for protection on the name “Huawei 7P”. This has triggered considerable conjecture about what Huawei may have in store for the U.S. market, especially since it is a market the company is keenly interested in.

Huawei’s success in the U.S. thus far has not been so much thanks to their own branded devices, which generally are not available, but due to the company’s selection to produce the Nexus 6P smartphone last year. That device was considered a big success for Huawei as it showed they could produce quality hardware that U.S. consumers would be interested in.

Meanwhile, although interest in tablet devices has slid considerably in recent years, Google was mildly successful with their own Nexus 7 tablet from 2013. The device did not “wow!” the world with high end specs, but it was a capable device at a very reasonable price point.

That brings us to this point where the use of the number 7 could indicate a successor to the Nexus 6P device, albeit branded by Huawei themselves, or it could indicate the company is working on a 7-inch tablet device. The latter seems like it might have generated a name like the “Nexus 7P” instead of the use of Huawei in the name though if Huawei was extending their partnership with Google into the tablet space.

Using the Nexus program as a way to get a foothold in the market makes sense for a manufacturer and this would not be the first time we have seen this happen.
