Next generation of camera sensors from Samsung already in the works

When Samsung released their new Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones this year, the manufacturer quickly captured the crown for best smartphone camera from DxOMark. Not to be outdone, the HTC 10 recently matched the feat of scoring a best ever 88 from DxOMark for the unit’s camera. This never-ending quest to offer consumers the best camera in a smartphone certainly drives significant research and development on the part of manufacturers. It should be no surprise then to learn that Samsung is already heavily investing in a new generation of camera sensor to continue to push the boundaries.

Sources indicate Samsung is working on a new CMOS sensor that will measure 1/1.7″. For comparison, the Galaxy S7 comes equipped with a 1/2.5″ sensor produced by Sony. In addition to improvements to the sensor size, Samsung appears to be pushing for an aperture of f/1.4 and with pixel counts in the 18 – 24 MP range. The rumor is Samsung also hopes to bring an interface over to smartphones from their NC camera line.

To reach these goals, Samsung has abandoned their NX line of cameras and shifted those resources, including people, to their mobile department. In the short-term Samsung is working on a sensor with a 1/2.3″ measurement which should be better than what comes in the class-leading Galaxy S7 Edge. That is only a stop along the way to the 1/1.7″ unit.
