Last year Google stepped up its game when it comes to security. This was done by initiating scans of apps in the Play Store. Google hoped this would reduce the number of apps containing harmful threats like viruses and malware.
Based on the Android Security 2015 Annual Report, Google did indeed step up its game when it comes to Android Security. One of those numbers depicted a tremendous increase in the number of apps scanned for potentially dangerous threats. In 2015, this number increased to approximately 6 billion, which is incredible growth. Google calculated that only 0.15% of devices with apps installed from the Play Store experienced potentially harmful security threats from an application. Note that this does not include those who sideloaded apps from outside sources.
Some other improvements were seen in areas like data collection, Spyware, and Hostile Downloader. Data collection saw a decrease of more than 40% in 2015, which is now down to only 0.08% of installs. Spyware decreased 60% in 2015 alone, which is now marked down to only 0.02% of installs. Hostile Downloader also managed to decrease by 50%, coming in at about 0.01% of installs.
Some other steps were taken by Google in 2015 to improve security measures as well. Google’s monthly security update program has been a big success at keeping devices immune from attacks. This also helps Google discover flaws in the system that need to be patched. Devices running Marshmallow have an added layer of protection with Google’s addition of full disk encryption. Additionally, new app permissions allowed people to stay in-control of their own privacy.
