Huawei at a press event today announced the Huawei VR, a direct challenger to Samsung’s Gear VR headset.
So, this begs the question, is the Huawei VR any different than the Gear VR? Unfortunately, no. It’s able to display 360-degree movies and games as you move your head around the room, just like the Gear VR. And the interesting thing is that the Huawei VR almost looks identical to the Gear VR, making it difficult to tell the two apart.
To make it even more difficult to find differences, Huawei has the same touchpad placed on the right hand side of the headset, a back button directly above the touchpad, and then the standard adjustment gear at the top of the headset.
The only real difference as far as looks go is the Huawei logo on the headset. There is one key difference, though: the Huawei VR supports use for the P9 and P9 Plus, which means this virtual reality headset uses USB Type-C and not that standard micro-USB connector as you’ll find on the Gear VR.
That’s, unfortunately, all we have for details. Huawei didn’t offer up a price for the headset, but did reveal that the Huawei VR would launch in 2016, likely during the summer.
