The Chinese-made Chery J11 SUV has been recalled over a potential fire hazard.
A notice posted to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s recalls.gov.au website states that 796 examples of the Chery SUV built between 27 March 2009 and 29 December 2010 will be called back to dealerships to inspect a fault.
The notice states that on “early Australian production J11 vehicles the fuel pump bracing case may potentially crack”, and the hazard that could ensue as a result of that part cracking is a potential fuel leak, and therefore a possible fire hazard.
The Australian importer for Chery vehicles, Ateco Automotive, indicated to CarAdvice that there have been no incidents of this nature in Australia.
Owners of affected models of the Chery J11 will be contacted by mail. The inspection and repair takes approximately 45 minutes.
Ateco Automotive has previously stated that the importation and sale of Chery models has been placed on hold due to specification and product shortcomings.
The brand was – at one point – selling the most affordable car in Australia, the J1 city car, at $9990 driveaway.
