2016 BMW G310R – FIRST LOOK REVIEW This new entry-level BMW arrives early next year.

2016 BMW G310R on-road action We knew that BMW had a sub-500cc model in the works, and here it is: the 2016 G310R, a compact city-type roadster that will be unveiled at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan next week. This new 2016 G310R—built in India by TVS Motor Company, a partner of BMW Motorrad—is designed to compete with the likes of the KTM 390 Duke and the many small-displacement machines from Japan such as the Honda CBR300R, the Kawasaki Ninja 300, and the Yamaha YZF-R3. So, what is this new BMW G310R? It’s an all-new bike designed for “relaxed, stress-free” riding, and power is provided by an all-new engine—a liquid-cooled 313cc DOHC 4-valve single with electronic fuel injection. Interestingly, the intake is on the forward edge of the cylinder, which has been canted rearward to create room for the injection. With an 80.0mm bore and 62.1mm stroke, this new BMW single puts out a claimed 34 horsepower at 9,500 rpm, backed by 21 pound-feet of torque at 7,500 rpm. Claimed weight of the bike? Just a hair below 350 lb. The KTM 390 Duke, for the record, tips the scales at a claimed 342 lb. 2016 BMW G310R static side view This new BMW G310R, designed for the world market, is based on a tubular steel chassis with a bolt-on subframe, and the suspension features a single-shock rear, an aluminum swingarm, and an inverted fork. Although we don’t have specific numbers yet, BMW says the bike will get excellent fuel economy yet have enough power to cruise down the highway with ease. We’ll have to see about that. Meantime, with regard to styling, BMW says the naked new G310R has a sporty look influenced by the S1000R, with an overall appearance highlighted by a small headlamp, a “dynamically modeled” fuel tank, and classic roadster proportions. 2016 BMW G310R on-road riding action Other details include a low 30.9-in. seat height, which will please shorter riders, plus a clear multifunction LCD instrument panel and easy-to-use controls. ABS, as on all BMWs, is standard, and single discs are employed at both ends. The front tire is a 110/70R-17; the rear is a 150/60R-17. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but we do expect to see the new 2016 BMW G310R in dealers early next year. And don’t be surprised to this all-new model spawn some other small-displacement siblings, including a faired sportbike and maybe even a GS Adventure version. Let’s hope this GS is an ADV in spirit and intent, not just looks. 2016-BMW-G310R-action-1 2016-BMW-G310R-action-2 2016-BMW-G310R-action-3 2016-BMW-G310R-action-4 2016-BMW-G310R-action-5 2016-BMW-G310R-action-6 2016-BMW-G310R-action-7 2016-BMW-G310R-action-8 2016-BMW-G310R-action-9 2016-BMW-G310R-action-10 2016-BMW-G310R-action-11 2016-BMW-G310R-action-12 2016-BMW-G310R-action-13 2016-BMW-G310R-static-1 2016-BMW-G310R-static-2 2016-BMW-G310R-static-3
