The facility that served as headquarters of Nash-Kelvinator and American Motors from 1937 to 1975 has had a rough history since it was cast off in the 2009 Chrysler bankruptcy. The facility, located 14250 Plymouth Road in Detroit, was originally constructed by Kelvinator and most recently served as an engineering facility for Chrysler’s Jeep and truck products before falling into dubious ownership.
The facility in its heyday, showing a since-demolished power plant to the north.
Now, according to the Detroit News, Wayne County has finally foreclosed on the property for unpaid property taxes, as has been threatened since 2013. Bidding begins at $500 (plus the unpaid summer tax bill of $160,631), and runs through October 22. The winner will get not only the 1927-vintage administration building, but the remaining portion of the factory complex on over fifty acres.
This could be your chance to rescue this facility and maybe get a jump start on the Nash / Hudson / Rambler / AMC museum we all deserve.
