How many times have you and a buddy (or two) lingered long over some abandoned old heap waxing dreamily about its potential only to shrug your shoulders and turn your back on it muttering what ifs and could bes?
Well, an ambitious and optimistic crew from collector-vehicle insurer Hagerty is at Hershey this weekend proving that no old heap needs to be left behind. After digging a 1946 Ford pickup out of a backyard in Michigan, they assessed the damage, sorted out the truck’s brakes then dragged everything to their booth at Hershey on October 7. The plan is to make the truck roadworthy, using parts sourced from sponsors and the swap meet, by the end of day on Saturday, October 10, then drive it 750 miles back to Hagerty HQ in Michigan.

Admittedly the timetable sounds nuts, but you have to admire their chutzpah. Maybe even draw some inspiration from it for your own project.
As of this writing they’re looking for parts, so if you’re at Hershey and you think you might have something they need you can drop buy one of their three booths (on the above map in blue) or head over to the site of the build at Chocolate Flea Market South to egg them on.

If you’re skipping Hershey you can see the build — which they’re calling the “Hagerty Swap to Street Challenge” – livestreamed on YouTube here or head over to Hagerty’s blog for more about the truck and the team.
