Yamaha is recalling certain 2008-2011 WR250X and 2008-2015 WR250R dual-sports because of a problem with the electrical system. The recall affects 12,721 units in the U.S. The recall also affects the 250cc version of the Majesty scooter offered in other markets such as Japan.
According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the insulation on the stator coil in the alternator may become damaged, potentially causing a short circuit. This would cause the battery to discharge and reduce overall electrical output, affecting a number of systems including speedometer function and lighting, and may cause the engine to stall.
Yamaha dealers will inspect recalled models and replace the stator coil with a new one that has improved bobbin insulation that can withstand a higher heat range.
