Yamaha Recalls 2015 FJ-09, FZ-09, FZ6R, Super Tenere and R6

Yamaha announced a recall on 2015 models of the FJ-09, FZ-09, FZ6R, Super Tenere, Super Tenere ES and YZF-R6 because of a risk of transmission failure. The recall affects 4,900 motorcycles in the U.S., all produced from Sept. 1 to Nov. 17, 2014.

According to Yamaha, the problem is with the shift cam segment stopper on the transmission shift shaft (see diagram below). This inner edge of the segment stopper should be rounded with a smooth radius where it bends. On affected units, however, the edge is sharp. After continued use, the stopper may crack at the sharp edge due to fatigue from concentrated stress. This may cause the stopper to break, preventing the transmission from shifting properly.

The transmission shift shaft (highlighted yellow in the diagram) has a small bend, marked with the two arrows at the bottom, serving as the shift cam segment stopper. The inner edge of the bend has a sharp edge that should have been smooth.

Yamaha dealers will replace the shift shaft assembly on affected motorcycles. Owners are advised not to ride their motorcycles until the repair work has been completed.
