The Volkswagen Scirocco GTS will make its official debut at the 2015 Shanghai auto show, which kicks off next week.
Like the original Scirocco GTS, which was introduced way back in 1982, the new iteration features a drivetrain shared with the contemporary Golf GTI. That means that under the striped bonnet lives a 162kW version of Volkswagen’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
Equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, the Scirocco GTS can race from 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 246km/h. With the optional six-speed dual-clutch automated transmission, the GTS is said to be just as quick to 100km/h, but top speed is curtailed to a mere 244km/h.
Under the EU fuel economy standard, the GTS is claimed to drink 6.1L/100km in manual guise and 6.4L/100km/h when fitted with the dual-clutch transmission.
The GTS rides on a new style of 18-inch alloy wheels, with 19-inch rims an optional extra. Behind these live brake calipers that are painted red as standard.
Other external differences over lower-specced Sciroccos include an R-Line styling kit comprising of a front bumper with glossy black fitting and integrated fog lights, wider side sills, a roof spoiler, rear diffuser, plenty of GTS badging and black wing mirrors. The stripe package seen here will be standard in some locales and standard in others.
On the inside, the GTS features a black interior with contrasting red stitching, chromed window switches, stainless steel pedals and piano black highlights, as well as the golf-ball style gear knob that’s more commonly associated with the Golf GTI.
Volkswagen says the new Scirocco GTS will go on sale across Europe from the end of May, with the GTS entering Chinese showrooms during the northern summer. We’re waiting to hear back from VW Australia as to when, or if, the GTS will arrive down under.
