“The GP15 is a revolution. You can see the differences yourself.” That’s what
Ducati Corse General Manager Gigi Dall’Igna had to say about the new Desmosedici GP15 that Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone will ride in the 2015 MotoGP World Championship. Designed from scratch, the new GP15 presented today at the Ducati Auditorium in Borgo Panigale is smaller and lighter. Every single detail has been studied to make the bike compact. “This bike breaks with the past and we have ambitious projects. Our target is to win a race this year,” Gigi Dall’Igna said, supported by CEO Claudio Domenicali. “The spirit that I have seen during these last few months in Ducati Corse reminds me of the same enthusiasm with which the MotoGP project got underway in 2003,” Domenicali said. “The new GP15 best represents the pride and the desire to win of everyone in Ducati Corse. We are only at the start, but the results will soon reward our efforts. Ducati has just finished an excellent 2014, a year in which we recorded new record sales, delivering 45,100 bikes to customers, 25 percent in the USA, which remains one of our main markets.”
Revolution or continuity? The expectation is high for the GP15 because it’s the first bike completely realized by Dall’Igna, who joined Ducati at the end of 2013 with the demanding mission of bringing the Desmosedici back to the victory. “When I arrived, I realized that the main reason why Ducati was not able to improve was the lack of communication inside the company. This is a key issue, especially in the racing department.” “My philosophy is that the best idea wins,” Dall’Igna continued. “My job is to collect and select the winning ideas that can improve the project. Of course I have the last say, but my engineers are asked to criticize my ideas if they don’t agree.”
“We started to design the bike from scratch in April/May 2014. My knowhow, together with Ducati’s experience, was the base. There are many new things that had never been tried before. The GP15 breaks with the past, although the good points have been maintained. We worked to make a smaller and more compact machine. The differences are minimal in terms of percentage, but they allow us to make a different set up and the final result is a complete new bike.” “We will do a comparison test at the next Sepang test. I don’t know if the GP15 will be faster than the GP14.3 at the end of the week. We will focus on the chassis first, while the development of the engine, also in terms of weight, will be done during the season. I expect the engine to be lighter at the end of the coming season. We won’t work on the seamless [gearbox]. Last year, we made important steps forward [with the gearbox] and we are satisfied with it, although it involves only the first 4 gears, not 5th and 6th gear.” Continued Dall’Igna: “I have never thought to win races at the dyno. We aimed at finding the best compromise among all the parts. A powerful engine helps, but we worked a lot also on the chassis, meeting the riders’ requests, who were complaining about the understeering.”
“Our main request was to make the bike turn better,” Andrea Dovizioso said. “This will help us to manage the tires better in order to fight with the front riders ’til the end. The GP15 is beautiful. I like a lot the rear end. The bike is smaller and the seat is very narrow. I’m really excited. Making the bike slimmer reminds us of the Japanese bikes, but the GP15 remains a Ducati. Last year, we started with a big gap from the top riders and Gigi’s target was to reduce the gap to 10 seconds. We made it, and we also claimed some important podium finishes. I’m confident that we can fight for the win, but it won’t be easy.” Dovizioso will line up with Andrea Iannone, who makes his debut with the factory Ducati team. “I did immediately well with the Desmosedici GP14.3 in the recent tests at Sepang and I look forward to testing the GP15 next week. Riding a factory machine is a dream come true and I feel that it’s turning point in my career.” In just a few days, the Ducati Team will leave for Malaysia for the second round of winter tests at Sepang in preparation for the 2015 MotoGP opener that takes place March 29 in Qatar.
