Hemmings Sunday Cinema – NASA’s Stirling-powered vehicles, Bulletproof Beauty, postwar Willys Jeeps, Maximum Overdrive

* Unfortunately, this circa 1992 NASA video focusing on the Stirling external-combustion engines that the agency put in a handful of vehicles doesn’t mention the AMC Spirit that received the engine swap, but it does make Stirlings seem like a perfectly reasonable alternative to internal-combusion engines.

* Bernhard Bredehorn grew up with fond memories of his grandparents’ Mercedes-Benz 280, so it was only natural that he wanted one of his own, but it took more than just finding one to fulfill his dream. Petrolicious sits down with him to get the story on his 1972 280 S/8.

* What were Jeeps good for once they made the switch from military vehicle to Universal Jeep? As we see from this Willys-Overland promotional video from 1950, a whole lot: trench digging, cemetery work, spraying DDT all over the place. Good times. Part 2 of the video is here.

* Finally, the only movie Stephen King directed, the 1986 horror-thriller “Maximum Overdrive,” based on his short story, “Trucks.”
