Plug-In Hybrid Mitsubishi Montero
Legacy is a concept familiar to Mitsubishi loyalists. Particularly as Lancer Evolution endures its final year of production, considerations of history and heritage are strong among the Mitsubishi faithful. Channeling turbocharged torque to all four wheels for 15 years, Evo will be remembered and rejoiced in for years to come.
Evo is far from the only Mitsubishi model held in fond memory, however. Mitsubishi Montero enjoyed 24 glorious years of U.S. production, and the vehicle is still remembered as one of its era’s most genuinely capable sport utilities. The vehicle’s strong off-road resume has even spawned a healthy demand for pre-owned Montero models—a matter to which Continental Mitsubishi can most certainly attest.
With all due respect to Montero’s rugged 4×4 history, new reports suggest that nostalgia may no longer be the primary narrative attached to Mitsubishi’s rock-crawling legacy vehicle. No, it’s not as if Montero has fallen out of SUV favor. On the contrary, support for the sport utility may have revived the nameplate’s production prospects—this time as an efficient Plug-In Hybrid Mitsubishi Montero model.
Of course, hybrid technology represents the next phase in Mitsubishi’s efficiency efforts. It’s not as if the automaker is kicking things off on a simple scale, however. Whereas most automakers will first apply plug-in technology to small sedans or hatchback models, Mitsubishi is starting with its seven-seat Outlander. And according to recent reports, “starting” is the operative term there.
In accordance with Mitsubishi’s comments that SUV innovation is its key brand strategy in American markets, current buzz and speculation would indicate the automaker’s intent to offer a second plug-in SUV option that would build on the momentum of its 2016 Outlander PHEV. While the five-seat Outlander Sport is certainly in the conversation, there’s a feeling that the automaker may go back to the well of full-size utility with a Plug-In Hybrid Mitsubishi Montero SUV.
Though it’s too early to tell if a Montero PHEV could maintain the rough and tumble character of its beloved past, Continental Mitsubishi would certainly like to see it happen. Follow close on the Continental blog for Plug-In Hybrid Mitsubishi Montero details (if and) when they come to light.
