Ford EcoSport recalled over wiring defect

Almost 3000 Ford EcoSport SUVs have been recalled in Australia to correct a wiring defect that may cause the side airbags to not deploy correctly.

A total of 2804 EcoSport models produced between June 15, 2013 and August 26, 2014 are affected by the recall.

The official recall notice published on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) website explains the vehicles’ curtain airbag, seatbelt pre-tensioner and side impact sensor circuits have been incorrectly orientated in the main wiring harness.

“If the side airbags do not deploy correctly there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants during a collision,” the notice reads.

The issue is unrelated to the enormous Takata airbag recall that has affected over 100,000 vehicles in Australia and millions more around the world.

Ford Australia has advised owners of affected vehicles to contact their nearest Ford dealership for inspection and rectification. Customers looking for more information can contact Ford’s customer relationship centre on 1800 503 672.

Late last month, CarAdvice reported that approximately 47,000 EcoSport, Fiesta and Focus vehicles had been given a warranty extension because their six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions could exhibit “excessive clutch shudder during light acceleration”.
