So, you want a sports car but you're not exactly flush with cash? Let us introduce you to the 2014 Scion FR-S with its sports car looks, sports car handling, and not at all sports car price. Ask most people about their dream car and it likely leans less towards minivan and more towards supercar but most of us do not have that kind of cash. Everyone wants a sports car, probably in red, but the cost of entry can be something of a barrier. The 2014 Scion FR-S is a hot little sports car with a price tag that makes it very attainable with our tester coming in at $27,956. You're likely wondering just how sporty it can be with that kind of price tag and with being a souped-up Toyota, and the answer is very, very sporty. Take one look at the car and you know what you're in for behind the wheel. Yes, you can absolutely read this book by its shiny Firestorm (aka red) cover. It's short and very low with wide swooping curves that beg to be shown off and taken around a hard corner. 
There are chrome-tipped dual exhausts, projector-beam halogen headlamps, LED tail lamps and an obscenely good looking center mounted stop lamp that turns heads. Add 17" alloy wheels and color-keyed power outside mirrors, and just sitting there, it looks like it'd be a heck of a lot of fun to drive. The interior keeps the sports car promise with very low seats that are snug and comfortable. There's a lot of bolstering here and it's not just for show because you're going to need that in the corners. Things are comfortable, but not plush, well-equipped but not flashy. You buy this car because you want to drive. This is not a large car and the rear seats are a challenge even for kids. A 6-foot adult in the front means absolutely no one is sitting in back, but that front seat passenger is going to be comfortable with plenty of leg and hip room. 
Every Scion FR-S gets a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Boxer with 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque and either a manual or 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters like our tester. Though that horsepower doesn't sound impressive, the car weighs just 2,800 pounds so that's more than enough to make it move. The drawback is that maximum torque comes in late in the game so this is not particularly impressive off the line. Don't worry, you'll be having so much fun taking corners at speed that not being the first to get there won't matter. Once you're off the side roads and out on the open highway, that's where things get downright fun. A low center of gravity has the FR-S hugging the road as those bolstered seats we mentioned earlier keep you nicely in place. Handling is nimble and effortless, and should you want to play a little more, there's a Sport mode button that lets you really have at the road. Once you pull off of the highway, it will remind you that it's a sports car and that side roads aren't really its friend. The ride is hard and loud and you will feel every bump and teeth-jarring pothole. Just remember, there's a highway at the end of that side road and once you arrive there you will completely forgive the beating you just took on the way. 
That affordable price also includes a huge number of standard features. You get a leather-trimmed, tilt-telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, aluminum scuff plates, sport pedals, and an analog tachometer with programmable rev indicator. It's also not lacking in technology with USB/Bluetooth/auxiliary inputs, an eight-speaker Pioneer sound system, and HD Radio. Options can be added a la carte, including the BeSpoke premium audio system with 5.8" LCD touchscreen display in our test model for $1,198 which was worth every eardrum bursting penny.
