Electric cars are directed primarily to an urban clientele, so offering diversified charging solutions is one of the main strategy points to bring electric vehicles to mainstream customers.
With that thought in mind, BMW is trying to make it easier to charge an electric car on the go, unveiling a prototype charging station built into a streetlight.
The “Light and Charge” streetlight was unveiled this week and combines the streetlights with the ChargeNow stations. The program is being currently piloted in Munich.
“Seamless charging infrastructure is essential if we want to see more electric vehicles on the road in our cities in the future,” said Peter Schwarzenbauer, a BMW board of management member.

First two prototype streetlights are already installed at the BMW HQ in Munich, and drivers will be able to pay for a charge through a mobile app. To promote the technology, BMW allows other electric vehicles brands to charge from the streetlight.
