2015 Audi A1 refresh brings three-cylinder engines to the party

The Audi A1 has been given a light makeover and, in a first for the company, will be available with a three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.

For the update, all A1s now wear slimmer and more angular headlights, as well as a sharper grille and revised tail-light graphics. These changes help to bring the regular versions of the city-friendly hatch into line with the S1 that was unveiled earlier this year.

The revised A1 also receives reworked front and rear bumpers, which, together, extend the car’s length by 20mm.

As we reported earlier, the revised A1 range will be the first Audis to use the Volkswagen Group’s growing line of three-cylinder petrol and diesel motors.

Kicking off the updated range is the new-to-Audi 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that, provisionally, is rated at 70kW of power. Under the European fuel economy testing scheme, this A1 is said to drink just 4.3L/100km.

Also newly available is a 1.4-litre three-cylinder turbo-diesel, which churns out 66kW of power and is said to consume 3.4L/100km in official testing.

Audi has yet to provide full details about the rest of the engine lineup, but a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission can be paired to each of the available four petrol motors and two diesel engines. A new electric power steering system is now standard throughout the A1 range.

As the S1 has only recently arrived on the scene, it seems to be unchanged. It will still feature a 170kW/370Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine hooked up to an all-wheel drive system.

With the standard six-speed manual gearbox, the S1 can complete the 0-100km/h dash in 5.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 250km/h.

We’re waiting to hear back from Audi Australia as to when the revised A1 range will arrive in local showrooms.
