Scion FR-S T1: Toyota 86 targa heading to SEMA

A targa top Toyota 86, dubbed the Scion FR-S T1, will be one of the Japanese brand’s main attractions at this year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas.

Will Toyota bring an open-top 86 to the market? Jeremy Lookofsky from Cartel Customs isn’t hanging around to find out. He and his team have come up with a targa top version of the Scion FR-S — in the US, the 86 is sold exclusively by Toyota’s youth brand.

Despite featuring wider front and rear wheel arches, as well as a black-on-blue paint scheme, the FR-S T1 is refreshingly restrained for a SEMA-bound vehicle.

Other aesthetic changes include smoked head- and tail-lights, retro-style wing mirrors, louvres for the rear window, a smoothly integrated rear boot lip spoiler and a large rear diffuser.

The FR-S T1 rides on forged 19-inch alloy wheels allied with a new coil-over suspension setup, which sits the whole thing closer to the ground.

With its GReddy turbo kit and a reworked exhaust system that culminates in a large centrally-mounted exhaust tip, the T1 should be faster and more powerful than regular 86/GT86/FR-S/BRZ models.

No performance or output figures have been provided by Toyota or Cartel Customs at this stage. A Wilwood Big Brake Kit is responsible for slowing the T1 down.

The FR-S T1′s seats, steering wheel, dashboard highlights, door trims and armrests are all swathed in light tan leather. The sound system features a touchscreen Pioneer head unit linked to a OEM Audio+ System 400.

Cartel Customs has junked the 86′s tight rear seats in favour of a few new covered bins and a customised storage space for the targa roof panel.
