TUSC: Hard qualifying for Audi teams at Road Atlanta

By Tarek Ramchani

The Audi teams faced a hard and unlucky qualifying session at Road Atlanta. None of the three Audi R8 LMS cars made it into the Top 10 for today's Petit Le Mans, the finale of the 2014 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

Best of the Audis was the #48 R8 LMS entry from Paul Miller Racing. The car in the hands of Christopher Haase, Bryce Miller and Matt Bell qualified in thirteenth place within the GT Daytona class with a best time of 1:23.592.

The two Audi cars from Flying Lizard Motorsports were right behind. The #35 R8 LMS with drivers Nelson Canache, Spencer Pumpelly and Andrew Palmer qualified in fourteenth place with a best time of 1:23.595.

The sister #45 Audi R8 LMS was eighteenth, the car is driven by Dion von Moltke, Seth Neiman and Alessandro Lattif.

GT Daytona pole position went to the #007 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 from TRG-AMR. The #58 Porsche GT America from Dempsey Racing was second. The #73 Porsche GT America from Park Place Motorsport was third.

TUSC: Oak Tree Grand Prix at Virginia International Raceway Next For Flying Lizard Motorsports

Flying Lizard Motorsports Press Release

It will be a very busy weekend for team driver Spencer Pumpelly (USA) as he will race in both Flying Lizard Motorsports Audi R8 LMS race cars during the two hour and forty five minute TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race, as well as trying his hand at announcing for the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo series at VIR. Spencer will join Dion von Moltke (South Africa) in the No. 35 PR Newswire / UBM Tech / eSilicon Audi R8 LMS, as Dion's normal co-driver and team principal Seth Neiman has not yet been cleared to return to the race car after a hip injury at the Brickyard Grand Prix at Indianapolis two races ago. Spencer will also race with his normal co-driver, Nelson Canache Jr. (Venezuela), in the No. 45 Yoddle / Venezuela / eSilicon Audi R8 LMS, starting the race in the No. 35 and finishing the race in the No. 45.

The 3.27-mile Virginia International Raceway circuit has been completely repaved and widened in spots, leading to a new challenge for all of the teams leading into the race weekend. Additionally, the race will be a GT-only affair, with the Flying Lizard's GT Daytona class being joined by GT Le Mans. This will make for much less traffic for all of the drivers as the Prototype Challenge class races separately and the Prototype class skips this stop on the TUDOR calendar.

Three total hours of practice will precede qualifying at 12:30pm ET on Saturday, August 23rd, with the race at 4:05pm ET on Sunday, August 24th. Live timing and scoring for the race and all practice sessions and qualifying can be found at www.imsa.com and on the IMSA mobile app. Qualifying will be broadcast live on IMSA.com and in the United States, the race will be televised live at 4:00pm ET on Fox Sports 1 and also on the Fox Sports Go mobile app. Outside of the United States, the full race broadcast will also be available live at www.imsa.com.

TUSC: Flying Lizard Motorsports Looks to Rebound at Continental Tire Road Race Showcase

Flying Lizard Motorsports Press Release

The Lizards have opened the second half of the season with a string of bad luck, including being on the receiving end of multiple instances of contact in the team's last race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but hope to turn things around at the 4.048-mile Road America race track during this weekend's two hour and forty five minute TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race. Nelson Canache Jr. (Venezuela) and Spencer Pumpelly (USA) will once again team up in the No. 45 Venezuela / eSilicon Audi R8 LMS and sit in 8th place in the GT Daytona class driver points, and look to move up in the standings with a strong showing this weekend. The team will also welcome a rising sportscar star to the No. 35 car, with Andrew Palmer (USA) subbing in for team principal and driver Seth Neiman, who is still on the mend from a hip injury which kept him out of the Indianapolis race. Andrew will join Dion von Moltke (USA) in the No. 35 Spyder / PR Newswire / UBM Tech / eSilicon Audi R8 LMS, and joins the team during a very successful Pirelli World Challenge campaign, in which he is currently tied for 3rd in the GT class standings. Andrew is the 2010 Rotax Jr National Karting Champion, the 2013 Blancpain Lamborghini Super Trofeo World Champion, and is racing an Audi R8 LMS ultra this season, all while studying full time at Pomona College in Claremont, California.

Driver Quote: Andrew Palmer, No. 35:
"I am very excited to be racing with the Flying Lizard Motorsports team this weekend at Road America in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race. I look forward to the transition to the GTD spec car, and coming from the Audi R8 LMS ultra, it will be very interesting to learn how to be quick with less aero and with no ABS or traction control. This is also my first ever endurance race! I grew up watching the Flying Lizard team race in the ALMS and in Grand Am and I can't wait to actually be a part of the effort. Hopefully Dion and I can put together a solid race and end up on the podium for FLM and for Audi Sport Customer Racing. It should be a great weekend!"

Flying Lizard is on track for practice on Friday and Saturday, with qualifying at 4:20pm CT on Saturday, August 9th. The race itself will start at 1:15pm on Sunday, August 10th. Live timing and scoring for the race and all practice sessions and qualifying can be found at www.imsa.com and on the IMSA mobile app. Qualifying will be broadcast live on IMSA.com and in the United States, the race will be televised tape-delayed starting at 6:30pm ET on Fox Sports 1 and also on the Fox Sports Go mobile app, and available live on IMSA.com. Outside of the United States, the full race broadcast will also be available live at www.imsa.com.

TUSC: Flying Lizard Motorsports - Brickyard Grand Prix results

Flying Lizard Motorsports Press Release

July 25, 2014 – Indianapolis, Indiana

The Flying Lizard Motorsports team's stretch of bad luck continued at the Brickyard Grand Prix, as the team's two Audi R8 LMS race cars were hit a total of six times during the two hour and forty five minute TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race, including once even before the race started. Spencer Pumpelly took the start in the No. 35 PR Newswire / UBM Tech / eSilicon car, filling in for injured team owner Seth Neiman. On the first of the two pace laps a competitor ran off track on cold tires and then abruptly rejoined, running into Spencer and causing the No. 35 car to spin. Then only 10 minutes into the race, Spencer was hit again, this time by an out of control Prototype class car. This caused a flat tire and Spencer pitted immediately for repairs. As each driver is only allowed to earn points in one car, the team took the opportunity to put Dion von Moltke into the car for the remainder of the race, but he too fell victim to poor and overly aggressive driving on the part of his competitors, being hit by another GT Daytona class car as well as a Prototype Challenge car as the race went on, before eventually finishing the race with body damage in 13th place in class.

Spencer's teammate Nelson Canache Jr. fared better, starting the race in 4th place and moving into the lead with an inspired pass to jump up two positions in one turn. But the same bad luck was to befall Nelson, as he was hit multiple times by the GTD class BMW and was forced into a spin as well. He was able to recover however and entered the pits in the top-5 during a lengthy yellow for track repair due to a damaged section of curbing. Spencer then took over the No. 45 Yoddle / Venezuela / eSilicon Audi but irregular handling caused by damage to the car hurt his race pace and an 8th place finish was all that was possible.

Flying Lizard hopes to shake its recent run of bad luck in two weeks at the Road America racetrack in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The race will be held on Sunday, August 10th, starting at 1:15pm local time.

TUSC: Second place for Paul Miller Racing Audi at Indianapolis

By Tarek Ramchani

The Audi R8 LMS performed well again in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. A fine second place for the Paul Miller Racing run Audi at Indianapolis.

The #48 Audi R8 LMS in the hands of Christopher Haase and Bryce Miller finished in a very strong second place within the GT Daytona class in the Brickyard Grand Prix. The two drivers were right behind the winning Ferrari 458 Italia from Scuderia Corsa.

The Paul Miller Racing team battled really hard in what is clearly seen the most fought class in the North American sportscar series. The car was leading the GT Daytona field in most of the second half of the race before the final pit stops. In the closing stages of the race Christopher Haase charged back chasing the leading Ferrari but the time run over. A strong result for the team and drivers and big points collected for the overall championship standing.

Best of the Flying Lizard Motorsport Audis was the #45 R8 LMS, eighth within the GT Daytona field. The car was shared by Nelson Canache Jr and Spencer Pumpelly. Their team-mates Dion von Moltke and Seth Neiman were thriteenth in class driving the #35 Audi.

The #46 Audi R8 LMS from Fall-Line Motorsports finished the 2h45 event in fourteenth place in GT Daytona class with drivers Charles Espenlaub and Charlie Putman.

Indianapolis race results can be seen here.

The next stop for TUDOR United SportsCar Championship teams and drivers will be at the very popular and fast Road America, August 8th-10th.

TUSC: Flying Lizard Motorsports Race Results - Mobil 1 Sports Car Grand Prix

Flying Lizard Motorsports Press Release

Flying Lizard endured a difficult day in the GT Daytona class in today's two hour and forty five minute TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race, finishing 10th with the No. 45 Venezuela / eSilicon Audi R8 LMS and 14th with the No. 35 PR Newswire / UBM Tech / eSilicon sister car. Seth Neiman started the No. 35 car and ran a clean stint, including narrowly missing a big incident between the No. 555 and No. 4 cars immediately in front of him. Dion von Moltke finished the race, running the last one hour and forty five minutes, and was able to make up three spots during his run. Nelson Canache Jr. started the No. 45 from last in class after the team's post-qualifying issues and was able to move close to the top ten, with Spencer Pumpelly bringing the car into the top ten with just minutes left in the race for a solid points-earning finish.

The team won't have long to dwell on this result, however, as the next race comes in just a week and a half at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which will be the 7th round of the 2014 championship hunt. The race will again be two hours and forty five minutes long, running into the evening on Friday, July 25th.

TUSC: The Audi teams heading to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park

By Tarek Ramchani

The TUDOR United SportsCar Championship is moving up north to Canada this weekend at the very popular Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, better known as Mosport. The Audi Sport customer racing squad will be represented once again by four Audi R8 LMS cars.

In Canada the Audi teams will be eager to perform well and secure a first GT Daytona class win this season. The R8 LMS cars were so close to victories in many races this year but were unlucky as was the case at Daytona, Laguna Seca and Detroit.

Flying Lizard Motorsports will field their two regular cars. The #35 Audi R8 LMS will be shared by Seth Neiman and Dion von Moltke. The two drivers are fourth in the overall driver's standing with 127 points each.

Their team-mates at Flying Lizard Motorsports Nelson Canache Jr. and Spencer Pumpelly will share the sister #45 Audi R8 LMS. The two drivers are ninth in GT Daytona standing with 119 points.

Fall-Line Motorsport will field the #46 Audi R8 LMS with drivers Charles Espenlaub and Charlie Putman who are sixteenth overall with 67 points.

The fourth Audi effort is coming from Paul Miller Racing. The #48 Audi R8 LMS will be driven by Christopher Haase and Bryce Miller, they are fifth overall in the GT Daytona standing with 126 points.

Action at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park will start on Friday with two practice sessions. The third practice session and qualifying will be held on Saturday. The 2h45 race is set for Sunday.

TUSC: Flying Lizard crosses the border for Mobil 1 Sports Car Grand Prix Presented by Hawk Performance

Flying Lizard Motorsport Press Release

The Flying Lizard Motorsports team heads to Canada for its only international race of the season, racing this weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, about one hour north of Toronto. The 2.46-mile track, formerly known as Mosport, will host three of the four TUDOR United SportsCar Series classes, with Prototype and GT Le Mans cars sharing the track with the GT Daytona class Audi R8 LMS race cars of Flying Lizard during the two hour and forty five minute race this Sunday, July 13th.

The team has yet to run the Nos. 35 and 45 R8s on the Mosport circuit, so it has entered drivers Spencer Pumpelly (USA) and Dion von Moltke (South Africa) in both cars in order to maximize the setup work which can be completed during the three 1-hour practice sessions available to the team over the course of the weekend. However, the drivers are only permitted to earn points in one car, so Dion will be nominated in the No. 35 PR Newswire / UBM Tech / eSilicon car with regular co-driver Seth Neiman (USA). Spencer Pumpelly will be nominated in the No. 45 Venezuela / eSilicon car, partnered with Nelson Canache Jr. (Venezuela). Entering this 6th round of the 2014 season, which also marks the halfway point to the final race, Petit Le Mans, Seth and Dion sit 4th in driver points while Nelson and Spencer sit in 9th position, although just 26 points back from the lead, with each race win worth 36 points towards the championship.

Quotes from the Team:

Steve Conover, Chief Engineer:
"Mosport definitely has similar setup requirements as Watkins Glen, with many elevation changes and sweeping turns, although at Mosport you don't get the helpful banking that you see at the Glen, and some sections at Mosport do crest in the deceleration zones. The slowest turn at Mosport is similar to Turn 11 at Laguna, although rougher with some broken pavement. The driving line otherwise is a mixture of asphalt paving with concrete patches, which is similar to many of the tracks we've driven at already this year, but the transitions are longitudinal rather than transverse, and the concrete often isn't level with the asphalt next to it. Overall the track presents some very interesting challenges from a setup standpoint."

Dion von Moltke, Driver:
"Mosport is one of the most popular tracks we go to from a driving standpoint. It has blind corners mixed in with high speeds which makes for a very intense track. To get around it fast you have to have a lot of confidence in your car on corner entry and also a good platform to support the car when it loses elevation as Steve described. Our Audi R8 LMS is very strong on braking and turn in, so I believe we will be very good in the first and last sections of the track. We do struggle on top end speed though and the long back straight will be tough compared to our competitors. If we can maximize the setup otherwise we should be very competitive and can hopefully battle for our first class win of the season to keep up the championship fight."

Flying Lizard is on track for three days during the race week, with qualifying at 5:20pm ET on Saturday and race start at 2:05pm ET on Sunday. Live timing and scoring for the race and all practice sessions and qualifying can be found at www.imsa.com and on the IMSA mobile app. Qualifying will be broadcast live on IMSA.com and in the United States, the race will be televised starting at 2:00pm ET on Fox Sports 1 and also available on the Fox Sports Go mobile app. Outside of the United States, the full race broadcast will be available at www.imsa.com.

TUSC: Flying Lizard Motorsports Finishes 7th and 14th at Watkins Glen

Flying Lizard Motorsports Press Release

Following a promising effort during yesterday's GT Daytona qualifying session, the Lizards were unfortunately unable to convert their strong starting spots into race results in the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen, with the No. 45 Yoddle / Venezuela / eSilicon Audi R8 LMS fighting through a flat tire and a suspension repair to stay on track and earn 14th place points for its drivers Nelson Canache Jr., Brett Sandberg, and Spencer Pumpelly. Nelson started the race with a double stint, interrupted by a flat left rear tire which required a slow in lap to the pits for repairs. Brett was up next for his double stint but it too was interrupted, as he was run wide by a PC car and spun due to pickup on his tires. Brett's awareness allowed for a quick dive into the pits but damage from a light wall impact after the spin meant that the team had to take the car behind the wall for further repair, replacing the right front upright and right rear track rod. Spencer then took over for his double stint before Brett finished the race out, although even a top ten finish was out of reach at that point.

As planned prior to the race, Spencer also joined Dion von Moltke and Seth Neiman in the No. 35 PR Newswire / UBM Tech / eSilicon Audi R8 LMS, starting that car from 6th place and rising to 3rd place during his stint. Dion maintained that spot for his first run in the car, and the team ran as high as 2nd place in class during Seth's stint. Dion closed out the race with a triple stint but despite the team's early pace only a 7th place finish was possible after losing laps to the class leading BMW, which showed consistently amazing pace throughout the race.

The team now enters the heart of the season, with the Watkins Glen race kicking off a run of five races in nine weekends. Next up, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on July 13th!

TUSC: Flying Lizard Ready For Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen

Flying Lizard Motorsports Press Release

The Flying Lizard Motorsports team has switched back to endurance mode for this week's 6-hour TUDOR United SportsCar Series race at Watkins Glen International Raceway, following two sprint races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and at the street circuit on Belle Isle in Detroit. Sunday's race will be the 5th of the season in the 11-race TUSC Championship season and the 3rd race in the North American Endurance Championship, with only Petit Le Mans to follow in October, which will culminate both championships. Team drivers Dion von Moltke (South Africa) and Seth Neiman (USA) sit 4th in the TUSC Driver Championship and 12th in the NAEC standings, with teammates Nelson Canache Jr. (Venezuela) and Spencer Pumpelly (USA) in 5th in TUSC and 6th in NAEC points.

For this race Spencer will join Dion and Seth in the No. 35 PR Newswire / UBM Tech / eSilicon Audi R8 LMS while still being entered in the No. 45 with Nelson and Brett Sandberg (USA). Brett has driven with the team previously and even competed against the team in a Porsche at the last race at Detroit. He comes to the team with help from Yoddle, a proximity based social media app that allows users to interact with one another, and one that he himself has been building for the past few years.

Brett Sandberg talked about his return to the Lizard team, saying "I am so excited and thankful for this opportunity to drive alongside Spencer and Nelson in this historic 6-hour race. Watkins Glen has always been one of my favorite tracks, almost a home track for me, and now to be able to compete in this event with such a tremendous organization as Flying Lizard in the No. 45 Yoddle / Venezuela / eSilicon Audi R8 LMS is like a dream come true!".

The Watkins Glen International circuit has hosted road racing in North America since 1948, including Formula 1 and NASCAR Sprint Cup series races over the course of its 65-year history. The 55-car TUSC field will use the 3.4 mile Long Course for its 6-hour race. Chief Engineer Steve Conover described the setup needs for the race, adding "The Watkins Glen track in many ways exemplifies what a good road course should be, with a number of fast, sweeping turns and very few compromises for track features. This allows a more ideal car setup than courses at which a bumpy section or tight corner might bias the setup. At this track, setup is more impacted by the race length than the track surface. Tire life, fuel stints, durability, and drivability are more important in the setup equation than at a shorter race event."

Flying Lizard first takes to the track on Friday, June 27th, with qualifying at 3:55pm ET on Saturday and the race start at 11:15am ET on Sunday. Live timing and scoring for the race and all practice sessions and qualifying can be found at www.imsa.com and on the IMSA mobile app. Qualifying will be broadcast live on IMSA.com and in the United States, the race will be televised starting at 11:00am ET on Fox Sports 1 and also available on the Fox Sports Go mobile app. Outside of the United States, the full race broadcast will be available at www.imsa.com.

TUSC: Flying Lizard Arrives At Detroit For Round 4 of 2014 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship Season

Flying Lizard Motorsports Press Release

The Flying Lizard Motorsports transporters rolled into Detroit today for a full race week
of activities at Belle Isle Park on the Detroit River, starting with an appearance for the cars, drivers, and crew at Audi of Rochester Hills tonight, a transporter parade through downtown tomorrow, and practice and qualifying sessions on Friday of this week, followed by the 1 hour and 40 minute Chevrolet SportsCar Classic starting at 12:10pm ET on Saturday, May 31st. The team enters the race weekend in very competitive shape in the GT Daytona class drivers' championship, with Dion von Moltke (South Africa) and Seth Neiman (United States) sitting in 4th place, just 6 points behind the championship leaders, in the No. 35 PR Newswire / UBM Tech / eSilicon Audi R8 LMS, and with Nelson Canache Jr. (Venezuela) and Spencer Pumpelly (United States) in 2nd place, 4 points back of the leaders, in the No. 45 Venezuela / eSilicon No. 45 Audi R8 LMS.

This race will feature two of the series' four classes – Prototype and GT Daytona, with 32 cars, of which 21 are in GTD with the two Lizard entries. It will be held on a 2.35 mile, 14-turn temporary road course on which only two of the Lizard drivers, Spencer and Dion, have race experience. Live timing and scoring for the race and all practice sessions and qualifying can be found at www.imsa.com and on the IMSA mobile app. In the United States, the race will be televised starting at 1:30pm ET on Saturday, May 31st on Fox Sports 1 and also available on the Fox Sports Go mobile app. Outside of the United States, the full race broadcast will be available at www.imsa.com.

Driver quotes:
Dion von Moltke, No. 35 Audi R8 LMS:
"Detroit could be the most demanding track which we go to in terms of what you need out of the car performance-wise and regarding the precision the drivers to have in order to turn a fast lap and have a clean stint. Unlike more traditional street circuits, Detroit has some very quick corners like the turns 1 and 2 complex and at the end of the back straight. It is an extremely bumpy track too, which is where we might have a bit of an advantage. Our engineers had the cars working well over the bumps at Sebring although some of the corners at Detroit can make Sebring look like a conventional, smooth road course by comparison. But you will see plenty of passing and side-by-side racing, and hopefully we can get both cars to the front by the end of the race!"

Spencer Pumpelly, No. 45 Audi R8 LMS:
"The circuit on Belle Isle is definitely one of my favorites. Like most street courses it presents the challenge of being precise with car placement given the proximity of the concrete walls but unlike many other temporary circuits it does offer some very fast corners. Turns 1 and 2 have a great flow to them and there are long straightaways which lend themselves to passing and side-by-side racing. We have lots of bumps and surface changes to contend with but I think we will have an advantage on terrain like this, and hopefully we can grab our first win of the season after having been so close in two of the three races so far."
