Dubai 24 Hours: Class podium for Red Camel Racing Audi R8 V8

By Johan Laubscher

The 24 Hours of Dubai was held this weekend. One Audi was on the entry list and competed in the ninth edition of the event.

The Audi was entered by Red Camel Racing, a regular entrant in the 24H Series. It is one of the two privately built Creventic Audi R8 V8 race cars, which are also known as “CR-8”. These Audis were built by Creventic and the first one debuted at the 2008 24 Hours of Dubai. Red Camel Racing later acquired one of the cars and has been competing with it for a number of years.

The #150 Red Camel - Jordans.nl entry was driven by Yusif Bassil, Jonathan Venter, Keith Kassulke and Maurice Faber. The Audi R8 was entered in the SP3 class, which is intended for GT4 equivalent cars.

They showed good pace during practice and qualified forty-fifth overall on the grid, second in the SP3 class.

It was a long hard race, but the Red Camel Audi entry ran well within SP3 and also moved forward through the field. By the end of the 2014 24 Hours of Dubai the #150 Audi squad came trough to finish twenty-sixth overall, taking third position in the SP3 class.

The 24 Hours of Dubai weekend results can be seen HERE.

The 24H Series will now be heading to Italy for the first running of the 12 Hours of Italy, hosted at Mugello. So far Red Camel Racing and their Audi R8 V8 is the only Audi entry on the entry list for the event in March.

WRT Belgian Audi Club with two R8 LMS ultra at Dubai 24

By Tarek Ramchani

The already healthy 2013 Dubai 24 Hours entry list will have another great addition. The Belgian Audi Club Team WRT will enter the Emirati endurance event with two Audi R8 LMS ultra cars.

WRT will debut in the United Arab Emirates at the beginning of 2013 but the Belgian team is now one of the strongest squads in endurance racing. WRT just won the Zolder 24 Hours and is still in the hunt for the Blancpain Endurance Series titles in both the driver and team standings. This entry raises the R8 LMS ultra squad up to three in the Dubai 24 Hours. The Americans from DragonSpeed are already confirmed with their Audi R8 LMS ultra.

No announcements have been made as of yet regarding the driver lineups for the two cars. However WRT will be among the big favorites for the overall win in the eighth edition of the Dubai 24 Hours. The provisional 2013 Dubai 24 Hours entry list is here.

Gallery: The only Audi R8 LMS ultra in North America

By Johan Laubscher

The Audi R8 LMS ultra has been a demanding force in international GT Racing during 2012. So far only one of these thorough bread machines have found a home in North America. The DragonSpeed team acquired the car earlier during the year and have been very busy testing. The team recently announced they will debut the car in 2013 during a string of endurance races. First on the team’s planned list is the Dubai 24 Hours and the Bathurst 12 Hours, followed by a European tour which includes the Nürburgring and Spa 24 Hours.

The DragonSpeed team’s latest test session was held at Roebling Road Raceway. Thanks to Stephan Bauer for these great photos from the test session.

4 Audi cars on provisional 2013 Dubai 24 Hours entry list

DragonSpeed - Audi R8 LMS ultra
By Tarek Ramchani

The Dubai 24 Hours is quickly becoming a true classic in endurance racing, the stellar event of the 24H Series. A demanding race with a big field that mixes the fast GT cars and slower Touring Cars. The race kicks off the annual sportscar season. The 2013 edition is maybe a little bit far from now, yet no less than 84 cars from around the world are already on the provisional entry list. The Audi brand is represented with four cars, with four diffrent models.

Red Camel - Audi R8
DragonSpeed, the only North American team with the new specification Audi R8 LMS ultra, will make their debut at the Dubai 24. The US ultra will be in the top A6 class, open for FIA GT3 spec cars. The Audi entry will face fierce competition from Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW, Lamborghini and McLaren for the outright win.

Another Audi R8, V8 powered, will be fielded by Red Camel - Jordans.nl, the car was privately built in Holland and is not related to the factory prepared R8 LMS. The Dutch R8 is competing for the SP3 class win.

Besaplast Racing - Audi TT RS
The all conquering Audi TT RS will compete in its first 24 hours race outside the Nordschleife. The quattro GmbH built racer will be fielded by the Germans from Besaplast Racing, a regular team in the VLN Endurance Series. The fourth Audi in the race is a S3 of Backdraft Motorsport from Britain. Both the TT RS and the S3 are listed in the A3T class.
