(China Daily) Pop singer Li Yugang, who is known for cross-dressing performances that have garnered him nationwide acclaim, has made a surprise transition to the silver screen with his directorial debut, Nostalgia.Drawing on inspiration and expertise gained from years of studying traditional opera, the film revolves around Qiu Shi, a rising star in a local Wu Opera troupe in Zhejiang province. As the troupe faces closure, her father passes away in an accident, exacerbating the situation. It was released domestically on Friday.
Confronted with crises in both her family and career, Qiu finds solace in her longtime boyfriend Qing Yun, who resigns from his job in another city to be by her side. Their relationship becomes more complicated as Qiu develops a special bond with Yin Chen, one of the troupe's makeup artists, a former performer who was forced to leave the stage following an injury.
The film was shot in Jinxi county in Lishui in Zhejiang province and, according to the producers, makes a feature of the area's scenery, as well as of distinctive landmarks such as the Yellow Emperor Temple.
Elements of traditional opera feature as a highlight of the film, among them Qiu reenacting classic scenes from Bai She Zhuan (The Legend of the White Snake), a famous Wu Opera production inspired by a popular folk tale about the love story between a snake demon and a handsome man.
The film stars Liang Yongqi as Qing Yun, the protagonist's longtime boyfriend.
