Mercedes-Benz EQB EV Takes a Spin at Nurburgring

Last year, a prototype resembling the Mercedes-Benz GLB sport utility vehicle was spied while undergoing testing, but a sticker found on its windshield read “Electric”. That led us to believe that we might be looking at the Mercedes-Benz EQB electric vehicle.

Recently, a new version of the prototype was spotted at Nurburgring. The auto was seen with lesser camouflage, which gives us a good view on most of its exterior.

At a glance, the vehicle looks like the regular GLB but a closer examination reveals that it is missing its exhaust pipes. The front grille of the SUV is hidden too. These things lead us to suspect that we might be looking at an EV or the EQB.

From what we know so far, the EQB will ride on a modified version of the MFA2 platform. The same architecture will be used by the upcoming EQA based on the second-generation GLA.

The EQB is expected to carry a 60 kW battery pack with an electric range of 200 miles at full charge. Meanwhile, a trademark filing of Mercedes in the U.S. hints the trims that will be offered by the range. These are the EQB 200, EQB 250, EQB 320, EQB 350, and EQB 360.

The EQB will likely arrive in 2021 together with the EQA and EQS. The first SUV under the EQ series is the EQC, which was originally scheduled to arrive in the U.S. this year but was later pushed to next year to allow Daimler to meet customer demand in Europe first.
