2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Makes Its Digital Debut

Despite the cancellation of the 2020 Geneva Motor Show because of the Coronavirus threat, the unveiling of the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class went ahead. The sedan, wagon, and hybrid variants of the car made their debut at the Global Media Site of Daimler. The range introduces more advanced tech, more safety features, and new trims. The All-Terrain model of the vehicle is arriving for the first time in the US in the late part of 2020.

Mechanical Specs

The facelifted E-Class was highlighted by its E350, E450, E350e, and Mercedes-AMG E53 models. The base E350 and E350 4MATIC models are equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine with 255 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The E450 takes the 3.0-liter turbo inline-six with EQ Boost that sets its total output to 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

The plug-in hybrid E350e combines the 2.0-liter inline-four engine with a 90 kW electric motor that puts its total power to 315 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Going in electric power, the car produces 121 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque.

The AMG E53 trim is the most potent trim of the range. It carries a 3.0-liter turbo inline-six engine that peaks at 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. All that power is distributed via a nine-speed automatic transmission. The setup lets the auto accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in only 4.5 seconds for the sedan and 4.6 seconds for the wagon. The top speed of the high-performance E-Class is capped at 155 mph.

Design

The most noticeable change in the E-Class can be found on its fascia. It now has narrower headlamps with full LED, thinner taillights, downward-oriented radiator grille, and more refined Panamericana vertical slats for the AMG variant. The car is available in Graphite Grey, Cirrus Silver, and Mojave Silver finishes. The interior reveals fresh upholstery options too.

Tech

The new E-Class showcases two large displays measuring 12.3 inches each. It has the new MBUX infotainment system integrated into it that is capable of recognizing voice commands. The touchpad in the central console found in the latest Mercedes vehicles is carried over to the car as well.

The new safety systems of the E-Class include the hands-off detection for the steering wheel, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, active steering, active blind-spot assist, auto emergency braking and 360-degree cam with an extended side-view monitor, among others.
