Byton at Noah – Mobile Geeks Podcast Episode 018

BMW debuted the Vision M NEXT electrified sports car in Munich, it’s a concept sports car that’s sporting a plug in hybrid engine. Some might argue it’s the best of both world’s others that it’s a pointless and expensive set up. Don and Nicole definitely fall on different sides of the fence on this one.

Nicole is sympathetic to BMW who believes their customers are hardcore petrol heads that need a soft landing into EV. A car that addresses fear of range and could be the way forward as the electrification trend takes hold.

Don understands that Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) go against the industry’s over all commitment to electric vehicles. Those that use the hybrids tend to just use them as regular cars and having two engines in one car makes it more expensive.

The Vision M NEXT only has a range of 100km which is up from 55km on the current 8 year old BMW i8. Is 100km enough for the urban environment? When Tesla unveils it’s roadster in a few months it’s pure electric and will have a range of 600km and will easily match the performance. An expensive half step in the direction of electrification

BMW is also banking on a trend we have yet to see. Cities implementing green zones where only electric vehicles will be allowed. Some car makers are pushing for PHEV’s to be included rather than only letting pure EV’s in. It’s a nice idea that geofencing will automatically switch your car from gas to electric. It’s an aspirational trend that is easy to appreciate and easy to see the folly.

Buckle up, as these two mobility experts tackle the hard question of whether or not hybrids are a stupid idea.
