Why I’m waiting to buy a Samsung Galaxy S10

It’s hard to get excited about elegant upgrades, we’re not living in a world where upgrading every year is the norm, even early adopters are pulling back on how quickly they swap handsets. I’ve already written about how I think Samsung is making the same mistake as Apple by pricing their smartphones way to high. This leaves room for brands like Xiaomi who are entering European markets to be taken seriously, I’ve got lots of data to check out in “The Galaxy S10 is solid, but is Samsung’s strategy?” if you want to learn more.

Since writing this piece, it seems that I might have been too hard on Samsung and they aren’t actually planning on charging that much for their phones. They’ve just decided to ruthlessly gouge their loyal fans with abusively high prices.

New data from BankMyCell reveals the Galaxy S9 lost over 40% of its value in month one and over 60% of its value disappeared in nine months making it “one of the fastest depreciating handsets.”

The upside is if you haven’t already picked up an S10 this weekend then you know better and should wait to pick up a bargain in a month.

The Performance Could be Better

Spec geeks will love this reason to hold off and maybe wait for the Galaxy Note 10, the entire Galaxy S10 range comes with UFS 2.1 storage. This is a big deal because UFS 3.0 is available and it’s twice as fast and more efficient, so it drains your battery less which means longer battery life.

The Galaxy Fold will come sporting UFS 3.0 and so will the Note 10 which we’ll see in about five months. So if you have to wait to pick up a Galaxy S10 anyway, it could be worth it to wait a little longer for the new Note.

There are also currently security issues with the Galaxy S10 facial unlock, it’s a great feature that I love on the Note 9. You almost forget that you’ve got security on your phone.

Samsung will issue an update and fix this, but it’s not great news for Germans who are obsessed with privacy, security and all things breach.

It could be that the business focused folks (which is almost everyone) are waiting for the Galaxy Note 10 anyway. When I asked Samsung a few weeks ago to borrow a handset I asked for the Galaxy Note 9, not the Galaxy S9+.

Do not buy the Samsung Galaxy S10, yet.

I’m in love with the Galaxy S10, it’s a solid handset that I will feel good about recommending to my friends (last year I helped many friends switch to Samsung). A 40% price drop one month after launch is more aggressive than most other manufacturers, so if you don’t need the pen and want a Galaxy S10, just wait for the price to drop! What are a few more weeks to save $400? Of course, if you do see your self as a person who really gets shit done on the go, what’s five months for the Note 10 which will at least comes with all the modern components?
