The Samsung Galaxy S10 line up returns with a focus on small screen size but packed with premium features.
Here is a quick rundown of the three devices, they all have the Exynos 9820 processor and a 12MP Dual pixel wide angle lens with OIS and a 16MP Ultra wide angle.
The Samsung Galaxy S10e dubbed the essential version, it’s the smallest a 5.8” and has a single front-facing camera and lacks the telephoto lens found on the rest of the line. It’s also got the smallest battery and no fingerprint sensor embedded in the display.
The S10 is a little larger a 6.1 and the S10 is 6.4” and both have the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor as well as an additional telephoto lens on the read. On the front facing camera, the S10e and S10 have a single shooter while the S10+ comes with an additional depth-sensing camera. The RAM, storage weight and battery size differ as well, check out the sheet below for more details.

Hardware
High-end specification is the name of the game for Samsung’s Galaxy line. The Exynos 9820 come with an NPU (neural processing unit) which specializes in processing artificial intelligence tasks. It allows the processor to perform AI related tasks 7 times faster than its predecessor. It will help in enhancing photos faster and in things like AR, the S10 comes with AI features built into the camera as well as an app control system that’s meant to offer personalized intelligence. More about that in the software section.
S10+ can have 1TB of storage, combined with the SD card you’ll have up to 1.5TB. They’ve decided to include so much storage because of offline streaming video downloads. Need a whole season to watch offline? No problem!
S10e 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage
S10 8GB RAM and options for 128GB & 512GB
S10 8 or 12GB and 512GB or 1TB
Vapor chamber cooling so gaming performance will be smoother.
The Samsung Galaxy S10+ comes with a special ceramic edition in black and white, if you’re measuring hardness a steel nail is rated at 6.5 a ceramic phone is 7.0 and a diamond would be 10.

Display
Hole punch is the design trend of 2019, Samsung calls it the Infinity O design, it is laser cut so the pixels around the hole are not damaged or changed in terms of quality. The edge to edge design is still beautiful and though the S10 & S10+ do have a curved display, it’s not as pronounced as previous generations, which we love.
Blue light certification is from TUV Rheinland Certified & the display has a color accuracy of 0.4JNCD
The display is bright and vivid but it feels a little less punchy and oversaturated. Samsung is well known for its vibrant and highly saturated AMOLED displays on the S10 line somehow it feels a little less exaggerated. This is because Samsung has reduced the amount of blue light that is emitted from its smartphones.
Why I like this feature very much is that it does it all the time, it doesn’t apply a filter to alter the color of your display at sunset. It just emits less blue light which is better for your sleep patterns.
Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor
I set it up, it seems to work much better than the OnePlus 6T. Very fast and reliable in my short test.
Camera
The Samsung Galaxy S10e has the most basic camera set up of the three only sporting the 12MP wide angle lens and a single selfie camera on the front. On the read with a 12MP Wide angle (77 degrees) with OIS and a 16MP ultra wide angle 123 degrees).
The S10 & S10+ have the same camera set up as the S10e but with an additional 12MP (45 degree) Tele 2X zoom lens also with OIS.
Samsung has added in intelligent camera features. It will optimize the image to what’s the in the scene, it will also suggest shots which will help with the composition of the photo.
All three smartphones come with a 10MP dual pixel AF UHD selfie cam but the S10+ has an additional with a 8MP depth sensor.
When it comes to selfies the S10+ does do a better job with selfies when you use the Live focus where it uses the depth-sensing camera to apply the effects. The photo quality of when the filter is applied is much better than when it’s done just using software. If you’re going with face unlock for some reason over the in screen fingerprint sensor it will work better on the S10+.
Samsung has also improved their Super night mode – in Samsung’s standard night mode 7 images are processed in 2-3 seconds, now we’re able to combine 17 images across 30-40 sections, obviously you’ll need a tripod for this.
The NPU will help the camera apply different features in artistic live focus, so the background is circular or with straight lines which is basically giving the simple ability to bokeh (which is still available) and the options which have a more dynamic approach. Samsung’s also added an AR ruler just in case you need to measure things on the go. We’re not sure how accurate it is.
The scene recognition is improved and can now recognize up to 30 different components inside a photo for local tone mapping. So if there are street lights in your picture as well as building and cats it will adjust the tone over 30 different sections, which is up from the 20 the previous generation was able to handle.
Super steady mode in video, you’re able to move around and capture tough subjects easily with the this mode.
Software – One UI
Samsung is changing the philosophy behind their UI, good buy touchwiz hello One UI.
The basic idea of it is that they want you to be able to have a chance at using your smartphone with one hand. The top part of the phone that is hard to reach is for messages or viewing and the bottom part is for interactions.
You see the camera UX changed to have less buttons at the top, messaging as well.
We would like to see the ability to change the height of this section, on the S10+ my small hands had a hard time reaching the power button and the top of the interaction section. But on the S10 I was able to use it no problem.
They’ve also included gestures, the navigation bar is replaced with three lines at the bottom which you flick upward or just press and they can launch the standard navigation actions (back, home multitask) or they can be remapped to other actions. This allows for greater customization. This feature is available on the Note 9, so you can expect it to roll out to older devices.
Personalized Intelligence
Samsung is integrating AI into your smartphone the main advantage is power saving. The handset will have improved performance with an auto app control system. The phone will get to know what apps you launch at certain times of day and in certain locations. Through machine learning will will work to optimize your battery life, enhance app launch speed and apply adaptive power saving to increase battery life. It will automatically close apps that it knows you won’t use at certain times or locations optimizing the power consumption and speed of the handset.
Battery Life
Wireless power transfer is not new, we’ve seen it in Huawei devices before, but it’s a useful feature. We like you can charge all your wearables with the phone, this is the main push for the wireless power transfer, that you can charge up your watch or earbuds and not have to worry about figuring out how to charge them on the go.
The reverse wireless charging or wireless power transfer on the S10 line can deliver .4 amps with 60-70% accuracy meaning it will only lose roughly 30% in the power transfer. We were told that you could expect to get a 10% charge in 30min, we aren’t sure what size battery you’re getting 10% of, but supposedly if you compare this to Huawei, the rate of transfer is better. We will have to test this feature to find out more.
Fast charge 2.0 wireless transfer standard.
Connectivity
The S10 line comes with WiFi6, in case you didn’t know, not all WiFi is equal a higher quality WiFi standard means that when a bunch of devices all connect to the same network, the device with the best connectivity standard will get the most bandwidth. You’ll get 4 times faster connection than other users, so if you’re in a busy train station, your connection will win. This also means a seamless transition between networks. Not all Wifi is created equal.
