Huawei Mate X: Why do we need a foldable phone?

The foldable phone is trying to solve 3 problems:

We want a larger display to stream videos

the fact that smartphones are running out of ways to innovate and gets people excited about phones again
& if you just have way too much money and need a way to spend it

Let’s look at the Huawei Mate X, the display is wrapped around the outside of the handset, it goes from having a single 6.6-inch display to a full 8 inch by 7.1, display on thee the back of the phone is slightly smaller at 6.38” because it has camera bar. The wrapped display has an interstellar blue color design, there is a fingerprint sensor is built into the power button and it’s 11m thick when folded and 5.4mm when totally flat.

There are 4 cameras in the side grip which will make it easier to hold when you’re on the go and it has Leica cameras that will enable your Instagram Influencer lifestyle to live its best life. One of the advantages to the camera set up is you can use the display on the back like a mirror, so the person getting their picture taking can see what they look like. It’s also an advantage if you’re doing a Livestream, you’ll be able to make sure that you’re in the frame for your facebook lives. No latency live streaming is actually one of the big advantages of going 5G.

The is no doubt that the wow factor for unfolding a smartphone is massive, it’s very futuristic.

But the question is: Do you actually need more screen real estate to stream more video? I’ve seen a lot of people watching Netflix on the subway with a cracked display’s. Sure, a nicer display is might make me watch more, but having a tiny cracked display won’t most people, especially generation z from watching hours of youtube.

It’s no coincidence that foldable phones are coming out the year the everyone is pushing 5G, more streaming video means more data. The Mate X is running a 7nm Balong 5000 with Quad 5G that will let you download a 1GB movie in 3 seconds. We have to warn you that having 5G will eat up lots of battery, the Mate X has 2 batteries on each side for a total of 4500mah and it comes with a 55W supercharge which will get to 85% in 30min.

It will be interesting to see if the foldable phone segment will drive regular mobile phone sales. There is no doubt that it will get people excited about technology again, I am starting to feel like I’m living in the future again!

It’s clear that the use case for a foldable phone isn’t solid, but that doesn’t stop me from facing the fact that I need one in my life. If for no other reason that this could be the next Google Glass, a technology that everyone can’t stop talking about, but ultimately goes nowhere. It’s a good thing that I’ve got 2299EUR burning a hole in my pocket so be sure to check back for our review when Huawei comes out with this phone towards the end of this year.
