Sony revealed the exact deployment dates of Android 9 Pie updates to select Xperia devices earlier this week. According to the smartphone manufacturer, the Xperia XZ Premium, XZ1, and XZ1 Compact will receive the operating system upgrade starting October 26, while the Xperia XZ2 Premium will get the software update on November 7. Aside from the company’s flagships, Sony will also deploy Android 9 Pie to three mid-range handsets – the Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra, and XA2 Plus, starting March 4. However, Sony reminds its customers that it deploys its updates in phases, meaning users may have to wait for several days before their devices receive the software upgrade. Carrier-branded units may also experience further delays in getting the software updates.
Once the smartphones are updated to the latest version of Google’s operating system, users may take advantage of features like Adaptive Brightness and Adaptive Battery. These two functionalities utilize artificial intelligence to extend the battery life of the handsets. Adaptive Brightness accurately adjusts the level of display brightness while the Adaptive Battery feature limits the resources provided to applications that the user rarely interacts. Moreover, users may now choose to share, edit, or delete a screenshot directly on the notification shade, and the media controls have been redesigned so that the volume controls appear on the left-hand side of the smartphone.
It should be noted that two of Sony’s handset offerings, the Xperia XZ2 and the XZ2 Compact, were already updated to Android 9 Pie, and the company launched its latest flagship smartphone offering, the Xperia XZ3, with Android Pie pre-installed. Moreover, the Xperia XZ2 also received beta versions of Android Pie as part of Google’s Android P Developer Program. Before installing the operating system upgrade, users should check if there is sufficient free space in the internal flash storage to temporarily keep the software files. The smartphones should also have sufficient charge to last the entire update process. Aside from Sony, HTC and Huawei have also enumerated their respective handset offerings that will receive Android 9 Pie. These devices include the HTC U12 Plus, the Huawei P20, and the Mate 10 series.
