Some Pixel 3 Units Have Issues With Saving Pictures: Report

In Short: According to a post on Google Groups, which was submitted on the Pixel User Community, some Pixel 3 phones have issues saving pictures. Truth be said, we did not have such issues on either of our units, but Artem Russakovskii (from Android Police), who shared the post, did, as some other users. He claims that this happens sometimes, and that the circle icon in the gallery actually shows the picture (as if it saved it), but when you click on it, and head over to Google Photos (or open any other gallery app on the side), the picture is not there. In the post, Mr. Russakovskii also points to several different outlets which have pointed out such an issue with their Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL units, and the interesting thing is, this issue is not new at all, which we’ll talk about in a second.

Background: The “disappearing image” issue has been around for a while now, as the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL users had this issue, and they still do, it seems. If you check out replies on the Pixel User Community post in question, you will notice that many of them have the very same issue on their Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL units, and it’s unclear why Google still did not fix this issue as it’s obviously been present for a long time, and now it extends to the company’s newest flagships. For those of you who do not know, Google actually introduced the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL units quite recently, and both of those phones ship with the latest version of Android out there, Android 9 Pie. Needless to say, both are offering stock experience, and it’s interesting to see that the disappearing image issue is still present, as this is a completely new version of Android that we’re talking about… it’s possible that the issue lies in the Google Camera, though. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL sport the very same camera setup, both phones have a single 12.2-megapixel camera on the back, and Google actually processes images quite a bit, which the company got praised for a number of times thus far, and hopefully, they’ll fix this bug in the near future.

Impact: Needless to say, this issues can be quite annoying… you capture that perfect photo that you’ve been trying to get, or a moment that you don’t want to forget, and then it disappears all of the sudden. Luckily it happens occasionally, and only on some phones, it seems, as we did not have the issue during our testing, but that doesn’t mean it won’t’ creep in at some point. The issue also seems to be shared via Reddit as well, so hopefully, Google will get the wind of it soon, and act on it… even though the company still didn’t fix that very same issue on their previous flagship offerings. The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are actually quite capable smartphones, even though the jump in camera quality is not what some of you might have expected, in order to know more, check out our full review of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, and feel free to take a look at a separate camera review.
