Samsung Unveils Exynos Auto & ISOCELL Auto For Smart Vehicles

Samsung recently announced two new semiconductor offerings, known as the Samsung Exynos Auto and the ISOCELL Auto. According to the South Korean tech giant, its two new products offer accurate detection of objects and roadways, fast data connection, and powerful graphics and data processing.

The Exynos Auto is Samsung’s application processor lineup for smart vehicles, and it features multiple custom-designed CPU cores and advanced GPU. Samsung claims that its latest chipsets offer sufficient processing power needed to handle multiple operating systems on separate displays while simultaneously delivering a responsive user interface. This chipset can support up to four HD displays at the same time, including the heads-up display and the main infotainment display. The SoC also comes with an integrated LTE modem that supports technologies like carrier aggregation and MIMO antennas for faster data speeds needed by vehicles with telematics systems. The modem can also connect to 2G and 3G networks, and Samsung claims that the future versions of the chipset will include modems that are compatible with 5G networks. Aside from telematics systems, car makers may incorporate the chipset in in-vehicle infotainment systems and advanced driving assistance systems. Earlier reports already stated that Samsung will start the mass production of the processors before the end of the year and it intends to supply the Exynos Auto chipsets to Audi. The German automobile maker previously relied on Qualcomm-manufactured chipsets and rumors indicate that some of Audi’s 2019 vehicle models will utilize Samsung’s processor offering.

Meanwhile, the ISOCELL Auto is a lineup of image sensors that take advantage of an advanced pixel technology for superior light sensitivity and image resolution. This technology permits the sensor to accurately identify objects and roadways even in low-light environments. The image sensor also features wide dynamic range that improves detection of objects in high-contrast environments like when driving through tunnels, and Samsung claims that these image sensors can survive exposure to extreme temperatures ranging from -40 to 105 degrees Celsius. Even before the release of its latest semiconductor offerings, Samsung has already designed and showcased products for smart vehicles. These products include the self-driving platform DRVLINE and the Bixby-powered digital cockpit platform known as QLED Auto.
