Samsung SM-W2019’s Support Page Appears Ahead Of Launch

Samsung’s upcoming flip phone from the SM-W series has been indirectly confirmed by the OEM recently, having been given its own support page on the Samsung China website. As yet, detailed information is missing from the support page but the same device bearing the SM-W2019 moniker has been approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance earlier in October and already paid a visit to the Chinese regulatory agency TENAA. Much like the SM-W2018 launched late last year, the upcoming model is expected to feature two displays and several flagship-grade internal components.

Despite the unusual, almost retro clamshell design, the SM-W series is known to pack quite a punch and likewise, the upcoming SM-W2019 is expected to make use of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset. That is unsurprising considering that the SM-W2018 before it was equipped with the Snapdragon 835 SoC coupled with 6GB of RAM, and ran Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box. For the upcoming model, the OEM seems to have pushed the software up to Android 8.1 Oreo with no signs of Android 9 Pie as of yet, but either way, the OS will most likely be of the Samsung Experience variety, with the OEM’s custom UI and applications likely to sit on top of Google’s mobile software solution. Furthermore, judging by several pictures (below) previously attached to the TENAA application – but which are now missing – the clamshell smartphone will follow the same base design guidelines as its predecessor, featuring two back-to-back displays fitted on the upper half of the phone, while the lower half sports a physical numerical keyboard on one side, and a camera setup on the other. But the camera setup seems to have changed drastically from last year’s model which was equipped with a single unit boasting an impressive f/1.5 glass module, and now comprises two cameras with unknown specifications.

It’s likely that the Samsung SM-W2019 will be unveiled around December, one year after its predecessor was officially introduced in Asia. And much like last year and the year before that, the SM-W2019 will probably remain exclusive to China where this form factor is still somewhat popular. But perhaps Samsung’s clamshell phones will make a stronger comeback outside of China next year with the advent of flexible displays, and the SM-W flip phone series will go through more notable design changes facilitated by the new display technology.
