OnePlus 6T To Ship With Android Pie; Delayed For OP3, 3T, 5 & 5T

In Short: OnePlus’ co-founder and CEO, Pete Lau, has confirmed that the OnePlus 3, 3T, 5, and 5T users will have to wait in order to get their taste of Android 9 Pie. In addition to that, he also said that Android 9 Pie will come pre-installed on the OnePlus 6T, which is to be expected, considering that it landed on the OnePlus 6 a while back. Pete Lau did, however, want to assure users who use the OnePlus 3, 3T, 5, or 5T that the update is coming, but that it will take the company a bit of time to push it out to those devices. Pete Lau said that the company’s engineers will need more time in order to fully prepare Android 9 Pie for those four devices, as the company wants to avoid any unnecessary bugs, and everything of the sort. The company’s co-founder did also mention that the OnePlus 6T will go on sale in China on November 5, while it will become available globally on November 6. Needless to say, China’s version of the device and the global unit will not be the same, as they will ship with a different software on top. That is more or less everything that Pete Lau shared, for now.

Background: OnePlus has been talking about the OnePlus 6T for quite some time now. The company had already confirmed quite a few details about the device, as we do know that the phone will ship without a 3.5mm headphone jack, and that it will sport an in-display fingerprint scanner. The removal of a 3.5mm headphone jack did not sit well with OnePlus’ consumers, as many of them were displeased with the company’s move, but it remains to be seen if that will affect the OnePlus 6T sales. The company has also confirmed that the phone will ship with an in-display fingerprint scanner of an optical kind, so it remains to be seen what will OnePlus’ implementation look like, but that fingerprint scanner will hardly be faster than the capacitive unit included on the back of the OnePlus 6. The OnePlus 6’s fingerprint scanner is regarded to be one of the fastest out there, and OnePlus has hopefully managed to implement this optical in-display fingerprint scanner in a satisfying manner, otherwise it will be a failure on their part.

OnePlus had recently announced that a “brand new UI” will ship on the OnePlus 6T, and we’re presuming that the company is talking about a new OxygenOS UI. OnePlus did not share any more details regarding that, though, so it remains to be seen how will the UI look like. OnePlus did say that it has optimized its gesture-based navigation for the OnePlus 6T, and that it will be more functional than ever. On top of that, the company is adding a new gesture to its navigation, you will be able to swiftly swipe from the bottom of the display (center part), to the upper-right part in order to quickly switch between two last apps you used. On top of that, a quick action for calling up Google Assistant will be added as well, you will be able to hold the power key for 0.5 seconds in order to fire up Google Assistant.

The OnePlus 6T will resemble the OnePlus 6 quite a bit, the phone will be made out of metal and glass, and its back side will look the same as the one on the OnePlus 6, aside from the fact a fingerprint scanner will not be placed there. The front side of the OnePlus 6T will look more appealing as the device’s display notch will be considerably smaller than the one on the OnePlus 6. The OnePlus 6T will sport the so-called ‘waterdrop’ notch that we’ve already seen on the OPPO R17 and some other devices. The phone’s front-facing camera will be included there, and also the phone’s earpiece which will sit in the upper portion of that notch. The OnePlus 6T will ship with the same processor as the OnePlus 6, while it will sport the same RAM options as its predecessor, quite probably. The device’s battery will be larger, though, as it’s expected to come with a 3,700mAh unit, but its display will also be larger than the one on the OnePlus 6, as the OnePlus 6T is expected to come with a 6.4-inch fullHD+ OLED panel. The device will have an improved dual camera on the back, which is also something OnePlus mentioned, though we do not know if the company plans to include new sensors altogether, or did it talk about software-related changes only. On top of everything it is worth noting that the phone’s cases surfaced yesterday, so feel free to check out what will OnePlus offer, though the OnePlus 6T’s cases seem to be the same as the ones offered for the OnePlus 6, at least for the most part. It is worth noting that this is just a leak, of course, the company still did not confirm what sort of cases can we expect for the device, and it will not do that until the phone becomes official.

Impact: As many of you already know, the OnePlus 6T will be announced on October 30 in New York, and as you can see, we already have quite a few info about the device. The phone’s price tag did not surface just yet, but it is expected to be more expensive than the OnePlus 6 was / is. The OnePlus 6T’s base model may end up costing around $560, or something of the sort, though that’s just a guess at this point. The company will surely reveal more info before the device gets announced, though, as we’re still about two weeks away from the event, not to mention that new rumors and leaks will probably surface as well. As far as the Android 9 Pie update for the OnePlus 3, 3T, 5, and 5T is concerned, Pete Lau did not give out any indication as to when can we expect it to arrive, so it’s possible that it may not land for those four devices until early 2019, though that’s just a wild guess, we’re still two and a half months away from 2019, so it’s possible that the company will push it out in either November or December, we’ll see.
