Dedicated neural processing units (NPU) in smartphones are nothing new. Huawei’s Kirin 970 has a dedicated NPU, as will the upcoming Kirin 980 in the Mate 20 series. And if new info is real, Samsung will be getting into the NPU game with its upcoming Exynos flagship chip.
The LinkedIn profile of a former Samsung Senior Hardware Design Engineer was found to have mention of work on a second generation NPU design. This could mean that the next Galaxy flagship will feature an NPU.
To support this, there are also rumors that the next Snapdragon processor will also feature an NPU. Technical uniformity between Exynos and Snapdragon devices has been important for Samsung (to the point of allegedly disabling 4K60 recording on some models) so the two processors both launching with NPUs makes sense.
This information is not verified so we don’t know if it’s true. However it makes sense, and with everyone hopping on the AI bandwagon, an NPU will definitely help the brand.
