In Short: App Annie has just released a huge report ahead of Google Play Store’s 10th anniversary. This report is basically an infographic of sorts, and it contains quite a bit of data, including plenty of app-specific data, which even lets us find out what were the best / most popular apps in the Play Store since its inception. Let’s start with some general Google Play data, shall we, though, before we begin, do keep in mind that all the data provided here has been collected for the period from January 2012 to August 2018 (unless mentioned otherwise). According to App Annie, apps were downloaded nearly 330 billion times from the Play Store, while consumers spent over $85 billions on those apps. A total of 2.8 billion apps were available in the Play Store back in August this year, while over 5,000 apps generated more than $1 million when it comes to consumer expenditure.

There are various graphs presented in the report that was provided to us by the company, and you can check out some of them in the gallery down below. App Annie says that Google Play revenue growth outpaced downloads, and that it nearly doubled between 2015 and 2017. Interestingly enough, Google Play actually generates more than twice the downloads compared to Apple’s iOS App Store. In some markets, people have over 60 apps installed on their phones, and use over 30 of those apps each month, including India, Brazil, UK, US, Australia, Germany… and a number more. People from APAC actually account for over 50-percent of Google Play expenditure, as you can see in one of the graphics provided down below.

Now, games are quite popular in the Google Play Store, as the account for 41-percent of downloads, based on data from 2017, but generate way more profit for developers than regular apps, as expected. 88-percent of money that people spend on apps, actually goes towards games, which is not surprising considering that many users utilize in-game purchases, while regular apps are mostly limited to monthly subscriptions and one-time payments. Consumers from Japan spent the most money on Google Play Store ($25.1 billion), and are followed by the US ($19.3), and South Korea ($11.2). Germany is fourth-placed, and is trailing way behind at $3.1.

App Annie also compiled a list of top games and top apps. A top game, by all-time-worldwide downloads is… Subway Surfers. This game is followed by the Candy Crush Saga, My Talking Tom, Pou, Temple Run 2, Hill Climb Racing, Clash of Clans, Minion Rush, 8 Ball Pool, and Fruit Ninja. As far as consumer expenditure goes, Puzzle & Dragons is the very first one, and is followed by Monster Strike and Clash of Clans. As far as regular apps go, Facebook took the first place when it comes to all-time worldwide downloads, and is followed by WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Clean Master, UC Browser, Skype, Snapchat, SHAREit, and LINE. People have spent the most money on the LINE messenger app, and that app is followed by Tinder, Pandora Music, LINE Manga, Netflix, KakaoTalk, LINE PLAY, HBO NOW, BIGO LIVE, and Pokecolo.

The fact that Facebook is the most downloaded app of all time is not at all surprising, but when it comes to games, some of you will probably be surprised by the results, as some of these games that are at the very top of the list are far more popular in Asia than they are in the US and Europe. There are plenty of messaging services included on the top app lists, which is also not that surprising, while you will see plenty of well-known names there as well.

It seems like just yesterday Google announced that 1 million apps are available on the Play Store, and that number nearly in a really short time frame. People are spending more and more on applications and games, though games are way ahead at this point, as the report clearly states, which is also not surprising due to various in-app purchases that you can make when it comes to games. Some of you have probably expected to see Candy Crush Saga ranked first on the all-time downloads list, but Subway Surfers somehow managed to trump Candy Crush Saga and push it to the second place. Temple Run 2, Clash of Clans, and Fruit Ninja are, unsurprisingly, on that list as well, as those are some of Android games that basically marked all of these years of the Google Play Store. Pokemon GO also managed to get on the list, though not on the downloads one, as it seems like quite a few people spend money in Pokemon GO, that is the 7th game on the list when it comes to how much consumers spent on it.
