More Android Phones Receive Pixel Buds’ Real-Time Translations

The real-time translation feature of the Google Pixel Buds is now available on all Assistant-optimized Android smartphones. The news was confirmed by the support page of the search giant for the Pixel Buds, which previously stated the function only works with the Pixel and Pixel 2 handsets. Aside from the expanded Google Assistant support, the latest version of both Google and Google Translate apps are required for the functionality to work.

Users may access the real-time translation feature using either the Google Assistant or the Google Translate application. With the Google Translate app, one will have to first set the languages that will be spoken to the Pixel Buds and the smartphone. After identifying the languages, the service can be activated by tapping the microphone icon to initiate the conversation mode. Users may also instruct Google Assistant to launch Google Translate’s conversation mode, and the service will translate the default language of the user and the language they requested in an earlier command. Once the conversation mode is activated, users may tap the right earbud to start a conversation while pressing the microphone icon in the Google Translate app will instruct the software to translate the response of the other individual. The real-time translation feature works with forty different languages, including Mandarin, Japanese, French, and Spanish, and aside from the Pixel Buds, it also works with a number of Assitant-optimized headsets.

Google launched the Pixel Buds back in October 2017 as its first pair of Bluetooth earphones. In addition to activating the virtual assistant, users may tap the right earbud to answer calls and play or pause music. Meanwhile, changing the volume of the earbuds requires the user to swipe up or down the right earbud. The Pixel Buds are compatible with Android handsets running Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher, although some of the earbuds’ features, including the Fast Pair functionality, only work with devices running Android Nougat or newer. The included case charges the earbuds wirelessly, and the device can last for up to five hours on a single charge.
