Instagram Co-Founder Says ‘No Hard Feelings’ Over Departure

In short: Instagram co-founder, Kevin Systrom has now offered some insight into his decision to leave the company and says that he holds “no hard feelings” about the ordeal, Business Insider reports. Speaking at the Wired 25 conference, the former CEO indicated that he left the company primarily because he felt the need to move on to new projects. Although there has been speculation that Mr. Systrom may have effectively been driven out by disagreements about the direction Instagram should take, the company is “in a really, really good place” according to the former executive.

Background: Originally, sources close to the company had claimed that the reason for both Mr. Systrom and fellow co-founder Mike Kriege departure from Instagram was the result of high tensions between the executives and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Instagram was bought out by the social networking giant back in 2012 for $1 billion and the company reportedly wanted to pursue a much more aggressive and deep integration between the platforms. The move would also have seen a lot of power removed from both co-founders hands, with Facebook executives taking more control over the direction of the company. However, Mr. Systrom denies that is the case, stating that it only played a very small role in his decision. The former CEO does acknowledge that there were conflicts and even some tension about Instagram, saying that “no one ever leaves a job because everything is awesome.” But goes on to clarify that he isn’t dwelling on those issues and is instead looking forward to working on “something new.” Specifically, Mr. Systrom said he is excited for the opportunity to set time aside to be more involved with other projects he has invested in.

Impact: In the meantime, Facebook has been forced to replace the executives on relatively short notice. Vice President of Product, Adam Mosseri, is thought to be the most likely pick to fill in for the positions for the time being. Mr. Mosseri is relatively new to his role and the situation is likely to delay any of the more immediate plans Facebook had for Instagram and possibly some of those that any disagreements may have centered around.
