Google wants to give you more 4K.
Google confirmed today that in the U.S. and Canada, it will upgrade any movies you own to 4K for free when those titles are available in 4K quality. This includes films that you’ve previously purchased in SD or HD quality. Just open up the Play Movies & TV app and you’ll see an alert to let you know which titles have been upgraded.
Also announced today is that 4K movies will now cost you less. Google says that “most” 4K movies on Google Play will now be cheaper than they were before.
To help more people watch 4K, Google says that owners of 4K Samsung Smart TVs can now watch 4K content using their Play Movies & TV app. The company is working to add support for LG TVs as well.
Finally, Google says that it’s updated its app for Samsung, LG, and Vizio TVs to give it a “modern look and feel” while also making it better to use.
This is all exciting news for anyone with a 4K TV. Not only are you getting free 4K upgrades for the films that you’ve previously purchased, but it’ll now cost less to buy new 4K titles, which is welcome news for anyone that’s just spent a bunch of cash on a 4K television set.
