In Short: Early Google Camera port with both Night Sight and Live Google Lens has just appeared online. This port has appeared on XDA Developers’ forums (posted by Arnova8G2), and this is a port of the Google Camera v6.1 application that comes pre-installed on both the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, which were introduced recently. This version of Google Camera also brings a new UI, and some extra features to older Pixel phones, including HEVC encoding, RAW capture support, capturing audio via external microphones during video recording, and so on. It is worth noting that this is an early port, it’s a beta APK, and it brings partially working Night Sight and Live Google Lens to the table.
Before you head to the link provided below this article, and try to download the APK, however, do keep in mind that you’ll need to have a phone running Android 9 Pie, and that doesn’t even guarantee that the app will work. This app is expected to work on previous Pixel phones, of course, but it also worked on our OnePlus 6 handset which has Android 9 Pie pre-installed, which confirms that it works with Android 9 Pie devices in general. Night Sight works alright in some occasions, in others, however, not so much. That’s alright though, as this is just an early port, as already mentioned, and the next iteration of the APK will probably be considerably better.
Background: Google Camera ports have been available online for a long time now, and Arnova8G2 has ported quite a few of them thus far, he is actually well-known for Google Camera ports. The Google Camera managed to become so popular because of its image processing, this camera does a lot in the software department, and it manages to improve camera setups on devices just because of that, that’s why quite a few people prefer to run these unofficial builds of Pixel’s Google Camera on their devices. For those of you who do not know, Night Sight is actually a new Google Camera feature which got rolled out to the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, and it basically improves night time photos without the need to use flash, of course. It captures a lot of photos with slightly above average exposure time, and then stitches them together in order to create a brighter, better-looking photo… at least in theory.
Impact: Arnova8G2 will release more Google Camera 6.1 ports in the future, that’s for sure. This one came really soon after the release of the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, so it’s not surprising that not everything works as it should. That’s a good indication though, and the next build will probably bring drastic improvements, at least that’s what usually happens when it happens to Arnova8G2’s Google Camera ports. If you’re interested in checking out this port, and you do have a phone running Android 9 Pie, a download link is included down below, for your convenience, as per usual. You can also check out an example of an image where this port managed to improve the situation, as that image is included down below as well.
